Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न सकामा करिष्यामि स्वम् इमाम् मातृ गन्धिनीम् ।
वने वत्स्याम्य् अहम् दुर्गे रामः राजा भविष्यति ॥२-७९-१२॥
na sakāmā kariṣyāmi svam imām mātṛ gandhinīm । vane vatsyāmy aham durge rāmaḥ rājā bhaviṣyati ॥ ॥2-79-12॥
Translation
I shall not fulfill the desire of this woman who calls herself my mother (but is mother only in name). I shall dwell in the impassable forest, and Rama shall be the King.

मैं अपनी इस 'माता कहलाने वाली' (माता के नाम को कलंकित करने वाली) स्त्री की इच्छा कभी पूरी नहीं होने दूँगा। मैं दुर्गम वन में निवास करूँगा और राम ही राजा बनेंगे।
English Commentary
This verse contains a potent rebuke of Kaikeyi. Bharata refers to her as mātṛ gandhinīm—literally "one who smells of a mother" or "one who has the trace of a mother." It implies she is a mother in biological name only, lacking the nurturing and protective qualities defined by the term. He explicitly states he will not make her sakāmā (one whose desires are fulfilled). By thwarting her ambition, he punishes her through the very tool she tried to use for his benefit. His resolve to live in the durge (difficult/impassable) forest underscores that he intends to suffer the hardships she wished upon Rama, denying her any satisfaction from her scheme.

यहाँ भरत का क्रोध और ग्लानि अपनी माता कैकेयी के प्रति प्रकट होता है। वे कैकेयी के लिए 'मातृ गन्धिनीम्' शब्द का प्रयोग करते हैं, जिसका अर्थ है 'जिसमें केवल माता की गंध हो' या 'जो नाममात्र की माता हो'। यह एक तीखा व्यंग्य है कि जिसने अपने पुत्र के विनाश का (आध्यात्मिक पतन का) मार्ग चुना, वह माता कैसे हो सकती है? भरत प्रतिज्ञा करते हैं कि कैकेयी की 'सकामा' (इच्छा) कभी पूर्ण नहीं होगी। कैकेयी चाहती थी कि भरत राजा बनें और राम वन जाएँ; भरत ठीक इसके विपरीत करेंगे। यह श्लोक स्पष्ट करता है कि भरत ने अपनी माता का त्याग कर दिया है, जो धर्म के मार्ग में बाधा थीं।
