Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
गतः दशरथः स्वर्गम् यो नो गुरुतरः गुरुः ।
रामम् प्रव्राज्य वै ज्येष्ठम् लक्ष्मणम् च महा बलम् ॥ ॥२-७९-२॥
Gataḥ Daśarathaḥ svargam yo no gurutaraḥ guruḥ । Rāmam pravrājya vai jyeṣṭham Lakṣmaṇam ca mahā balam ॥ ॥2-79-2॥
Translation
"Dasharatha, who was our supreme preceptor/protector, has gone to heaven, having exiled his eldest son Rama and the mighty Lakshmana."

"जो हमारे परम गुरु (श्रेष्ठ रक्षक) थे, वे दशरथ स्वर्ग सिधार गए हैं। उन्होंने ज्येष्ठ पुत्र राम और महाबली लक्ष्मण को वन भेज दिया है।"
English Commentary
The ministers succinctly summarize the crisis. They acknowledge the passing of the King, using high honorifics (gurutaraḥ guruḥ), but immediately juxtapose it with the exile of the natural heirs. By stating that Rama and Lakshmana are gone, they are legally establishing the necessity for Bharata to step up. It acts as a preamble to their request: the past King is dead, the future King is exiled; therefore, the present requires a new leader.

मंत्रीगण वर्तमान राजनीतिक स्थिति का सारांश प्रस्तुत करते हैं। वे दशरथ को 'गुरुतरः गुरुः' (गुरुओं में भी श्रेष्ठ) कहकर सम्मान देते हैं, लेकिन साथ ही वास्तविकता भी बताते हैं कि वे अब नहीं रहे। राम और लक्ष्मण के वनवास का उल्लेख करके वे यह स्पष्ट करते हैं कि उत्तराधिकार की स्वाभाविक पंक्ति (line of succession) टूट चुकी है। सिंहासन खाली है और वैध उत्तराधिकारी उपलब्ध नहीं हैं। यह भरत पर दबाव डालने की भूमिका है कि अब विकल्प केवल वही हैं।
