रामः पूर्वो हि नो भ्राता भविष्यति मही पतिः ।
अहम् तु अरण्ये वत्स्यामि वर्षाणि नव पन्च च ॥२-७९-८॥
rāmaḥ pūrvo hi no bhrātā bhaviṣyati mahī patiḥ । aham tu araṇye vatsyāmi varṣāṇi nava panca ca ॥ ॥2-79-8॥
Translation
Rama, being our eldest brother, shall indeed be the Lord of the Earth. I, on the other hand, shall dwell in the forest for fourteen (nine and five) years.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हमारे बड़े भाई राम ही पृथ्वी के स्वामी (राजा) होंगे और मैं उनके बदले चौदह (नौ और पाँच) वर्षों तक वन में निवास करूँगा।
English Commentary
This verse captures the essence of Bharata-Tyaga (Bharata's sacrifice). He proposes a direct exchange of destinies to nullify the injustice done to Rama. He asserts that Rama will be Mahi Pati (Lord of the Earth), while he accepts the sentence of exile intended for Rama. By specifying varṣāṇi nava panca ca (nine and five years), he shows he is adhering strictly to the terms of the boon granted to Kaikeyi, but he is changing the subject of the punishment. He intends to serve the sentence in Rama's place, thereby satisfying the technicality of his father's promise while restoring Dharma. It is a supreme act of vicarious atonement.

यह भरत का सबसे महान संकल्प है। वे केवल राज्य का त्याग नहीं कर रहे, बल्कि 'विनिमय' (exchange) का प्रस्ताव रख रहे हैं। कैकेयी ने राम के लिए वनवास और भरत के लिए राज्य माँगा था; भरत इसे उलट देते हैं—राम के लिए राज्य और स्वयं के लिए वनवास। 'अहम् तु अरण्ये वत्स्यामि' कहकर वे प्रायश्चित का मार्ग चुनते हैं। वे अपनी माता द्वारा किए गए पाप का भार अपने कंधों पर उठाना चाहते हैं ताकि श्रीराम अयोध्या लौट सकें। यह 'प्रतिज्ञा' भरत के चरित्र को एक नई ऊँचाई देती है, जहाँ वे सुख का त्याग कर जानबूझकर कष्ट को गले लगाते हैं। वे चौदह वर्ष की अवधि को भी स्पष्ट रूप से स्वीकार करते हैं।
