Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तां दृष्ट्वा परमप्रीतां ब्रुवन्तीं मन्थरां ततः ।
रामस्यैव गुणान् देवी कैकेयि प्रशशंस ह ॥२-८-१३॥
Tāṃ dṛṣṭvā paramaprītāṃ bruvantīṃ Mantharāṃ tataḥ |
Rāmasyaiva guṇān devī Kaikeyī praśaśaṃsa ha ॥2-8-13॥
Translation
Seeing Manthara speaking thus, the divine Kaikeyi, (not grasping her malicious intent), praised only the virtues of Rama.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मंथरा को इस प्रकार बोलते हुए देखकर, परम सुंदरी कैकेयी ने (उसके दुर्भाव को न समझकर) राम के गुणों की ही प्रशंसा की।
English Commentary
This verse illustrates the inherent purity of Kaikeyi’s original character. Despite Manthara’s intense instigation, Kaikeyi’s mind remains unpolluted at this stage. She loves Rama so deeply that news of his coronation brings her joy, and she fails to see the conspiracy or malice in Manthara’s words. Valmiki clarifies here that Kaikeyi was not wicked by nature; she genuinely regarded Rama as equal to her own son, Bharata. Her positive reaction is unexpected and ironic relative to Manthara’s intent.

यह श्लोक कैकेयी के मूल चरित्र की पवित्रता को दर्शाता है। मंथरा द्वारा इतना भड़काने पर भी, कैकेयी के मन में अभी तक कोई मैल नहीं आया है। वह राम से इतना स्नेह करती है कि उसे राम के अभिषेक की खबर सुनकर प्रसन्नता ही होती है, मंथरा की बातों में छिपा षड्यंत्र उसे दिखाई नहीं देता। यहाँ वाल्मीकि जी यह स्पष्ट कर रहे हैं कि कैकेयी स्वभाव से दुष्ट नहीं थी, बल्कि वह राम को अपने पुत्र भरत के समान ही मानती थी। उसकी यह प्रतिक्रिया मंथरा के लिए अप्रत्याशित थी।
