धर्मज्ञो गुरुभिर्दान्तः कृतज्ञ सत्यवाक्चुचि ।
रामो राज्ञः सुतो ज्येष्ठो यौवराज्यमतोऽर्हति ॥२-८-१४॥
Dharmajño gurubhirdāntaḥ kṛtajña satyavākcuci |
Rāmo rājñaḥ suto jyeṣṭho yauvarājyamato'rhati ॥2-8-14॥
Translation
Rama knows Dharma, has been disciplined by his gurus, is grateful, truthful, and pure. Being the King's eldest son, he deserves the position of Crown Prince.

राम धर्म के ज्ञाता, गुरुजनों द्वारा शिक्षित (विनीत), कृतज्ञ, सत्यवादी और पवित्र हैं। वे राजा के सबसे बड़े पुत्र हैं, इसलिए वे ही युवराज पद के योग्य हैं।
English Commentary
Kaikeyi is arguing in favor of Rama’s ascension here. She lists the qualities essential for an ideal king. 'Gurubhirdāntaḥ' means one who has learned discipline and restraint through service to his teachers. By emphasizing 'jyeṣṭho' (the eldest), Kaikeyi respects the tradition of the Raghu lineage, where the eldest son inherits the throne. This demonstrates that Kaikeyi understood royal duty (Rajdharma) and propriety, showing that her conscience and judgment were initially intact and sound.
