यथा मे भरतो मान्यस्तथा भूयोऽपि राघवः ।
कौसल्यातोऽरिक्तं च सो हि शुश्रूषते हि माम् ॥२-८-१८॥
Yathā me Bharato mānyastathā bhūyo'pi Rāghavaḥ |
Kausalyāto'riktaṃ ca so hi śuśrūṣate hi mām ॥2-8-18॥
Translation
Just as Bharata is dear to me, Raghava (Rama) is even more so. For he indeed serves me even more than he serves Kausalya.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जैसे मुझे भरत प्रिय हैं, वैसे ही, बल्कि उनसे भी अधिक राम प्रिय हैं। क्योंकि वह (राम) कौसल्या से भी बढ़कर मेरी सेवा करते हैं।
English Commentary
This is one of the most poignant verses in the Ramayana. It proves that despite being a stepmother, Kaikeyi loved Rama even more than her own biological son. The phrase 'Kausalyāto'riktaṃ' (more than Kausalya) highlights how intimate and devoted Rama’s behavior was toward Kaikeyi. Rama never discriminated between his mothers. This profound love makes the subsequent betrayal—when Kaikeyi exiles Rama—all the more shocking for Rama and makes Kaikeyi’s moral fall even more tragic.

यह रामायण के सबसे मार्मिक श्लोकों में से एक है। यह सिद्ध करता है कि सौतेली माँ होने के बावजूद कैकेयी राम को सगे पुत्र से अधिक चाहती थी। 'कौसल्यातोऽरिक्तं' (कौसल्या से भी अधिक) यह दर्शाता है कि राम का व्यवहार कैकेयी के प्रति कितना आत्मीय था। राम ने कभी भी माताओं में भेद नहीं किया। यही कारण है कि बाद में जब कैकेयी राम को वनवास देती है, तो यह विश्वासघात राम के लिए और भी अधिक चौंकाने वाला होता है, और कैकेयी का पतन और भी अधिक दुखद।
