कैकेयीवचनं श्रुत्वा मन्थरा भृशदुःखिता ।
दीर्घमुष्णं निःश्वस्य कैकेयीमिदमब्रवीत् ॥२-८-२०॥
Kaikeyīvacanaṃ śrutvā Mantharā bhṛśaduḥkhitā |
Dīrgham uṣṇaṃ niḥśvasya Kaikeyīmidamabravīt ॥2-8-20॥
Translation
Hearing these words of Kaikeyi, Manthara became exceedingly sorrowful. sighing long and hot breaths, she spoke thus to Kaikeyi.
हिंदी अनुवाद
कैकेयी के ये (राम-प्रशंसा युक्त) वचन सुनकर मंथरा बहुत दुखी हुई। वह लंबी और गर्म साँस लेकर कैकेयी से इस प्रकार बोली।
English Commentary
The scene shifts here. Manthara realizes that simple jealousy is ineffective because Kaikeyi’s love for Rama is too deep. 'Bhṛśaduḥkhitā' (exceedingly sorrowful) and 'dīrgham uṣṇaṃ niḥśvasya' (sighing long and hot breaths) depict her frustration and anger. Manthara now realizes she must change her strategy. She will move from provoking jealousy to instilling 'fear' and 'existential threat' to cloud Kaikeyi’s judgment. This verse marks the beginning of the specific manipulation that leads to Kaikeyi’s downfall.

यहाँ दृश्य बदलता है। मंथरा को आभास हो गया है कि सामान्य ईर्ष्या काम नहीं कर रही है क्योंकि कैकेयी का राम के प्रति प्रेम बहुत गहरा है। 'भृशदुःखिता' (अत्यंत दुखी) और 'दीर्घमुष्णं निःश्वस्य' (लंबी गर्म साँसें लेना) उसके क्रोध और हताशा को दिखाते हैं। अब मंथरा अपनी रणनीति बदलेगी। अब वह केवल ईर्ष्या नहीं, बल्कि 'भय' और 'प्राण-संकट' का सहारा लेगी ताकि कैकेयी की बुद्धि को भ्रमित किया जा सके। यह श्लोक कैकेयी के पतन की भूमिका का आरंभ है।
