अनर्थदर्शिनी मौर्ख्यान्नात्मानमवबुध्यसे ।
शोकव्यसनविस्तीर्णे मज्जन्ती दुःखसागरे ॥२-८-२१॥
Anarthadarśinī maurkhyānnātmānamavabudhyase |
Śokavyasanavistīrṇe majjantī duḥkhasāgare ॥2-8-21॥
Translation
Due to foolishness, you do not perceive the calamity, nor do you understand yourself; you are drowning in a vast ocean of sorrow and misfortune.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तुम मूर्खता के कारण अनर्थ को देखने वाली (या अनर्थ को न देखने वाली) होकर अपने आप को नहीं जान रही हो। तुम शोक और व्यसनों से विस्तृत दुःख के सागर में डूब रही हो।
English Commentary
Manthara shifts from subtle diplomacy to direct insults. She dares to call Queen Kaikeyi "foolish," intending to shake her out of her complacency. While Kaikeyi views the coronation as a celebration, Manthara frames it as a "sea of sorrow." Her argument is that Kaikeyi is so blinded by present happiness that she fails to perceive the looming calamity (anartha). This verse highlights Manthara’s desperation and aggression; seeing that gentle persuasion failed, she now resorts to harsh language to shatter Kaikeyi's confidence.

मंथरा अब कूटनीति छोड़कर सीधे प्रहार पर उतर आई है। वह कैकेयी को 'मूर्ख' कहने का साहस करती है, जो यह दर्शाता है कि वह कैकेयी की बुद्धि को झकझोरना चाहती है। कैकेयी राम के राज्याभिषेक को उत्सव मान रही है, जबकि मंथरा इसे 'दुःख का सागर' कहती है। मंथरा का तर्क है कि कैकेयी वर्तमान सुख में इतनी अंधी हो गई है कि उसे आने वाले संकट (अनर्थ) का आभास नहीं है। यह श्लोक मंथरा की हताशा और आक्रामकता को दर्शाता है, जो अब साम-दाम छोड़कर भय का प्रयोग कर रही है।
