Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न हि राज्ञः सुताः सर्वे राज्ये तिष्ठन्ति भामिनि ।
स्थाप्यमानेषु सर्वेषु सुमहाननयो भवेत् ॥२-८-२३॥
Na hi rājñaḥ sutāḥ sarve rājye tiṣṭhanti bhāmini |
Sthāpyamāneṣu sarveṣu sumahānanayo bhavet ॥2-8-23॥
Translation
O beautiful woman, not all sons of a king remain in power (succeed to the throne). If all were to be established as kings, a great calamity would occur.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे भामिनि! राजा के सभी पुत्र राज्य पर प्रतिष्ठित नहीं होते। यदि सभी को स्थापित (राजा) कर दिया जाए, तो बहुत बड़ा अनर्थ हो जाएगा।
English Commentary
Manthara cites political science here. She explains that a kingdom can have only one sovereign; all brothers cannot be kings simultaneously as it would lead to chaos ('anartha'). She aims to shatter Kaikeyi's naive belief that Rama and Bharata could rule jointly or that Bharata would naturally succeed Rama. She clarifies that sovereignty is indivisible. Therefore, Rama's ascension is not just a promotion for him, but a direct rejection of Bharata.

मंथरा यहाँ राजनीति शास्त्र का हवाला दे रही है। वह बताती है कि एक राज्य में एक ही राजा हो सकता है; सभी भाइयों को राजा नहीं बनाया जा सकता क्योंकि इससे अराजकता ('अनर्थ') फैलेगी। वह कैकेयी के उस भ्रम को तोड़ना चाहती है कि राम और भरत मिलकर राज्य कर सकते हैं या राम के बाद भरत राजा बनेंगे। वह स्पष्ट करती है कि सत्ता अविभाज्य है और 'एक म्यान में दो तलवारें नहीं रह सकतीं'। इसलिए राम का राजा बनना सीधे तौर पर भरत की अस्वीकृति है।
