Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
साहं त्वदर्थे संप्राप्ता त्वं तु मां नावबुध्यसे ।
सपत्निवृद्दौ या मे त्वं प्रदेयं दातुमिच्चिसि ॥२-८-२६॥
Sāhaṃ tvadarthe saṃprāptā tvaṃ tu māṃ nāvabudhyase |
Sapatnivṛddhau yā me tvaṃ pradeyaṃ dātumicchasi ॥2-8-26॥
Translation
I have come here for your sake, yet you do not understand me. You wish to give me a gift upon the prosperity of your co-wife (which is your own downfall).
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं तुम्हारे हित के लिए आई हूँ, परन्तु तुम मुझे समझ नहीं रही हो। तुम अपनी सौत (कौसल्या) की उन्नति होने पर मुझे ही इनाम देना चाहती हो।
English Commentary
Manthara rebukes Kaikeyi for her naivety. Kaikeyi had previously offered Manthara a jewel upon hearing the news of the coronation. Manthara mocks this gesture, pointing out the irony that Kaikeyi is celebrating her own rival's (Kausalya’s) victory and rewarding the messenger of her own doom. Manthara portrays herself as the only true well-wisher who has the courage to speak the bitter truth, while Kaikeyi blindly rewards her own destruction.

मंथरा कैकेयी को उसकी 'नासमझी' पर धिक्कारती है। कैकेयी ने राम के अभिषेक की खबर सुनकर मंथरा को आभूषण भेंट किया था (जो पिछले श्लोकों में वर्णित है)। मंथरा उसी घटना का उल्लेख कर रही है कि कैकेयी अपने ही शत्रु (कौसल्या) की जीत पर जश्न मना रही है और खबर लाने वाले को इनाम दे रही है। यह विडंबना मंथरा को क्रोधित करती है। वह स्वयं को कैकेयी की एकमात्र सच्ची हितैषी सिद्ध कर रही है जो कड़वी दवा पिलाने आई है।
