ध्रुवं तु भरतं रामः प्राप्य राज्यमकण्टकम् ।
देशान्तरं वासयिता लोकान्तरमथापि व ॥२-८-२७॥
Dhruvaṃ tu Bharataṃ Rāmaḥ prāpya rājyamakaṇṭakam |
Deśāntaraṃ vāsayitā lokāntaramathāpi vā ॥2-8-27॥
Translation
Having obtained the kingdom free of obstacles, Rama will certainly banish Bharata to another land or send him to the other world (kill him).
हिंदी अनुवाद
निष्कंटक राज्य पाकर राम निश्चय ही भरत को देश-निकासा दे देंगे अथवा परलोक (मृत्यु के मुख में) भेज देंगे।
English Commentary
This is the most terrifying verse of this canto. Manthara escalates from hypothetical loss of status to immediate existential threat. She claims that to secure a 'thornless' (uncontested) kingdom, Rama will either exile Bharata or have him killed ('lokāntaram' - sent to the other world). This is the darkest aspect of Machiavellian politics that Manthara injects into Kaikeyi’s mind. From this point on, fear begins to displace love in Kaikeyi’s heart regarding Rama.

यह इस सर्ग का सबसे भयानक श्लोक है। मंथरा अब काल्पनिक भय से सीधे 'प्राण-संकट' की ओर बढ़ गई है। वह दावा करती है कि राम अपनी सत्ता सुरक्षित करने ('निष्कंटक' - कांटों से रहित) के लिए भरत को या तो देश से निकाल देंगे या मरवा देंगे ('लोकान्तरम'). यह राजनीति का क्रूतम रूप है जिसे मंथरा कैकेयी के मन में बिठा रही है। यहाँ से कैकेयी के मन में राम के प्रति प्रेम के स्थान पर भय घर करने लगता है।
