दर्पान्निराकृता पूर्वं त्वया सौभाग्यवत्तया ।
राममाता सपत्नी ते कथं वैरं न शातयेत् ॥२-८-३७॥
darpānnirākṛtā pūrvaṃ tvayā saubhāgyavattayā । rāmamātā sapatnī te kathaṃ vairaṃ na śātayet ॥2-8-37॥
Translation
Having been slighted by you in the past out of pride born of your good fortune, how will your co-wife, Rama's mother, not seek to satisfy her grudge against you now?

अपने सौभाग्य के कारण गर्व से भरकर तुमने पूर्वकाल में जिनका तिरस्कार किया था, वे तुम्हारी सौत और राम की माता (कौशल्या) अब अपना बैर कैसे नहीं साधेंगी (बदला कैसे नहीं लेंगी)?
English Commentary
In this verse, Manthara targets Kaikeyi's personal security by invoking the past dynamics of the royal household. She reminds Kaikeyi that, as King Dasharatha's favorite queen (saubhagyavattaya), Kaikeyi had previously treated the senior queen, Kausalya, with arrogance and disdain (darpat nirakrita). Manthara uses this history to predict a grim future, arguing that human nature seeks retribution when power shifts.
Manthara asserts that once Rama is crowned, Kausalya will ascend to supreme power as the Queen Mother. She poses a rhetorical question: 'How will she not satisfy her enmity?' implying that Kausalya has been silently enduring Kaikeyi's dominance and will seize this opportunity to exact revenge (vairam shatayet). By framing the coronation as the catalyst for Kausalya's vengeance, Manthara transforms the event from a political celebration into a direct threat to Kaikeyi's dignity and safety. She urges Kaikeyi to act not just for her son, but for her own self-preservation against a rival she has wronged in the past.

इस श्लोक में मंथरा कैकेयी के मन में छिपे भय को जगाने के लिए उनके अतीत के व्यवहार का उल्लेख करती है। मंथरा याद दिलाती है कि महाराज दशरथ की प्रिय रानी होने के नाते ('सौभाग्यवत्तया'), कैकेयी ने अतीत में पटरानी कौशल्या के प्रति अहंकार ('दर्प') दिखाया था और संभवतः उनका अनादर ('निराकृता') किया था। मंथरा का तर्क है कि सत्ता के समीकरण बदलते ही पुराने हिसाब बराबर किए जाएंगे।
वह कैकेयी को चेतावनी देती है कि यदि राम राजा बनते हैं, तो वास्तविक शक्ति कौशल्या के हाथों में आ जाएगी। मंथरा पूछती है कि जिस सौत (सपत्नी) का तुमने अपमान किया था, वह अब समर्थ होने पर अपना 'वैर' या प्रतिशोध क्यों नहीं लेगी? मंथरा का उद्देश्य यह सिद्ध करना है कि राम का राज्याभिषेक न केवल भरत के अधिकारों का हनन है, बल्कि स्वयं कैकेयी के लिए भी विनाशकारी है। वह कैकेयी को यह विश्वास दिलाना चाहती है कि कौशल्या अब राजमाता बनकर अपने पुराने अपमानों का बदला लेंगी, इसलिए अपनी सुरक्षा के लिए कैकेयी को अभी कदम उठाना होगा।
