Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रत्यासन्नक्रमेणापि भरतस्तैव भामिनि ।
राज्यक्रमो विप्रकृष्टस्तयोस्तावत्कनीयसोः ॥ ॥२-८-७॥
Pratyāsannakrameṇāpi bharatastaiva bhāmini |
Rājyakramo viprakṛṣṭastayostāvatkanīyasoḥ ॥2-8-7॥
Translation
"O spirited lady! Even by the order of proximity (birth/succession), the turn for the kingdom belongs to Bharata alone. The succession is far removed for the other two, as they are younger."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे भामिनि! जन्म-क्रम (या समीपता) के हिसाब से भी राज्य पाने का (राम के बाद) अगला अधिकार भरत का ही है। वे दोनों (लक्ष्मण और शत्रुघ्न) तो छोटे हैं, इसलिए उनका राज्य-क्रम बहुत दूर है।"
English Commentary
Manthara interprets the laws of succession to suit her narrative. She argues that by 'Pratyāsannakrameṇa' (order of proximity/lineage), Bharata is the next in line after Rama. The younger two are distant ('Viprakṛṣṭa') from the throne. The implication is strategic: because Bharata is the only logical alternative to Rama, he is the only real threat to Rama's absolute power. Therefore, he is the one Rama will need to remove. Manthara isolates Bharata as the specific target of the alleged conspiracy.

मंथरा यहाँ उत्तराधिकार के नियमों की व्याख्या अपने हिसाब से करती है। वह कहती है कि राम के बाद मुख्य दावेदार भरत ही हैं ('प्रत्यासन्नक्रमेणापि' - निकटता के क्रम से)। लक्ष्मण और शत्रुघ्न छोटे ('कनीयसोः') हैं, इसलिए वे सीधे खतरे या दावेदार नहीं हैं। इसका अर्थ यह है कि राम की सत्ता को असली चुनौती केवल भरत से मिल सकती है, इसलिए राम का मुख्य निशाना भी भरत ही होंगे। मंथरा कैकेयी को समझा रही है कि 'टारगेट' पर केवल उसका बेटा है।
