चन्दन उदक सम्सिक्तः नाना कुसुम भूषितः ।
बह्व् अशोभत सेनायाः पन्थाः स्वर्ग पथ उपमः ॥२-८०-१४॥
candana udaka samsiktaḥ nānā kusuma bhūṣitaḥ |
bahv aśobhata senāyāḥ panthāḥ svarga patha upamaḥ ॥2-80-14॥
Translation
Sprinkled with sandalwood-scented water and adorned with various flowers, the army's path appeared magnificent, resembling the path to heaven.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह मार्ग चंदन मिश्रित जल से सींचा गया था और अनेक प्रकार के फूलों से सजाया गया था। सेना का वह मार्ग स्वर्ग-पथ के समान अत्यधिक सुशोभित हो रहा था।
English Commentary
The sensory description of the road reaches its peak here. Sprinkling the road with water to settle dust is standard, but using sandalwood water (candana udaka) elevates the act to one of royal reverence and worship. It ensured the air was fragrant and cool for the travelers. Adorned with scattered flowers, the road is compared to the Svarga patha (the roadway of the celestials). This grandeur serves a dual purpose: it provides comfort to the queens and citizens unused to hardships, and it serves as a testament to the kingdom's resources being poured out for the sake of bringing Rama back. The sheer opulence of the road stands in stark contrast to the ascetic life Rama has adopted.

यहाँ विलासिता और भक्ति का चरम दिखाई देता है। धूल को दबाने और शीतलता प्रदान करने के लिए साधारण जल के स्थान पर 'चन्दन उदक' (चंदन के पानी) का छिड़काव किया गया। यह भरत और माताओं के प्रति सम्मान का सूचक है। मार्ग पर फूल बिखेरे गए थे, जिससे वह 'स्वर्ग पथ उपमः' (स्वर्ग के मार्ग जैसा) प्रतीत हो रहा था। वाल्मीकि जी यहाँ यह विरोधाभास भी प्रस्तुत कर रहे हैं कि जिस मार्ग पर राम नंगे पाँव चले थे, उसी मार्ग को भरत के लिए स्वर्ग समान बनाया जा रहा है, फिर भी भरत का मन राम के दुख में डूबा है। यह बाह्य सौंदर्य और आंतरिक वेदना का मूक संवाद है।
