ततः नान्दी मुखीम् रात्रिम् भरतम् सूत मागधाः ।
तुष्टुवुर् वाग् विशेषज्ञाः स्तवैः मन्गल सम्हितैः ॥२-८१-१॥
tataḥ nāndī mukhīm rātrim bharatam sūta māgadhāḥ |
tuṣṭuvur vāg viśeṣajñāḥ stavaiḥ mangala samhitaiḥ ॥2-81-1॥
Translation
Then, as the night was facing the dawn (about to end), the Sutas and Magadhas (bards and genealogists), experts in speech, praised Bharata with auspicious hymns.

तदनंतर, जब रात बीतने को थी और अरुणोदय (नांदीमुखी) होने वाला था, तब वाणी के विशेषज्ञ सूत और मागधों ने मंगलमय स्तुतियों से भरत को जगाया (उनका स्तवन किया)।
English Commentary
Sarga 81 opens with the breaking of dawn, poetically described as nāndī mukhīm (joyous-faced or facing the auspicious opening). Following royal protocol, the Sutas (bards) and Magadhas (genealogists/panegyrists) wake Bharata. These professionals are described as vāg viśeṣajñāḥ (masters of speech/eloquence). They recite mangala samhitaiḥ (auspicious praises) intended to ensure a good start to the day for the sovereign. This creates a dramatic tension: the court treats Bharata as the King of Ayodhya with all accompanying pomp, while the reader knows Bharata's heart rejects this position entirely. It highlights the conflict between institutional duty and personal emotion.

सर्ग 81 का प्रारंभ 'नान्दी मुखीम् रात्रिम्' से होता है, जो उस समय को दर्शाता है जब रात समाप्त हो रही हो और शुभ प्रभात (नांदी) आने वाला हो। राजसी परंपरा के अनुसार, राजा को जगाने का कार्य 'सूत' (सारथी/पौराणिक) और 'मागध' (वंशावली गाने वाले) करते थे। वे 'वाग् विशेषज्ञाः' (वाणी के धनी) थे। यद्यपि भरत स्वयं को राजा नहीं मानते, लेकिन राज-तन्त्र उन्हें राजा ही मानता है और उसी प्रोटोकॉल का पालन करता है। 'मन्गल सम्हितैः' (मंगल युक्त) स्तुतियाँ भरत के लिए कष्टकारी हो सकती हैं क्योंकि वे विरह में हैं, लेकिन यह राजधर्म की निरंतरता को दर्शाता है।
