Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एवम् उक्तः सुमन्त्रः तु भरतेन महात्मना ।
हृष्टः सो अदिशत् सर्वम् यथा सम्दिष्टम् इष्टवत् ॥ ॥२-८२-२३॥
Evam uktaḥ Sumantraḥ tu Bharatena mahātmanā । Hṛṣṭaḥ so adiśat sarvam yathā samdiṣṭam iṣṭavat ॥ ॥2-82-23॥
Translation
Thus addressed by the high-souled Bharata, Sumantra, feeling delighted, ordered everything exactly as directed, in accordance with Bharata's wishes.

महात्मा भरत के द्वारा इस प्रकार कहे जाने पर, प्रसन्नचित्त सुमन्त्र ने भरत की इच्छा के अनुसार (इष्टवत्) सब कुछ वैसा ही आदेश दिया जैसा उन्हें निर्देश मिला था।
English Commentary
Sumantra's reaction reflects the general sentiment of the court. He is described as hṛṣṭaḥ (delighted). Usually, mobilizing an army implies impending conflict, but this mobilization is for a "rescue mission" of their beloved Rama. Sumantra, who had the painful duty of leaving Rama in the forest, now sees a chance for redemption. He executes the order iṣṭavat (according to desire/wishes), implying he didn't just follow the letter of the law, but the spirit of Bharata's intent, acting with personal zeal rather than mere bureaucratic obligation.

यहाँ सुमन्त्र की प्रतिक्रिया महत्त्वपूर्ण है। वे 'हृष्टः' (प्रसन्न) हैं। सामान्यतः, सेना का कूच युद्ध का संकेत होता है जिससे चिंता उत्पन्न होती है, परंतु यहाँ सेना का उद्देश्य 'राम-वापसी' है, इसलिए मंत्री से लेकर सैनिक तक सभी उत्साहित हैं। सुमन्त्र दशरथ के समय के मंत्री हैं और राम के वनवास से दुखी थे; अब भरत का यह निर्णय उन्हें नई आशा देता है। 'यथा सम्दिष्टम्' (जैसा निर्देश मिला) और 'इष्टवत्' (इच्छा अनुसार) यह दर्शाता है कि सुमन्त्र ने भरत के आदेश का पालन केवल एक नौकर की तरह नहीं, बल्कि एक शुभचिंतक की तरह पूर्ण निष्ठा से किया।
