Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तात राजा दशरथः स्वर् गतः धर्मम् आचरन् ।
धन धान्यवतीम् स्फीताम् प्रदाय पृथिवीम् तव ॥ ॥२-८२-५॥
Tāta rājā Daśarathaḥ svar gataḥ dharmam ācaran । dhana dhānyavatīm sphītām pradāya pṛthivīm tava ॥ ॥2-82-5॥
Translation
"O Dear One (Tata), King Dasharatha has gone to heaven having practiced Dharma, after bestowing this vast earth, rich in wealth and grain, upon you."

"हे तात! राजा दशरथ धर्म का आचरण करते हुए, यह धन-धान्य से संपन्न विशाल पृथ्वी तुम्हें सौंपकर स्वर्ग सिधार गए हैं।"
English Commentary
Vasistha opens his argument with the premise of Pitru Vakya Paripalana (obeying the father's word). He frames Dasharatha's death as a noble departure to heaven resulting from adherence to Dharma (truthfulness to his boons). Crucially, Vasistha asserts that the earth was given (pradāya) to Bharata. By framing the kingdom as a bequest already made by the late King, Vasistha implies that Bharata's acceptance is merely a formality to honor his father's final legal act.

वसिष्ठ का तर्क प्रारंभ होता है। वे भरत को 'तात' (पुत्र/प्रिय) कह कर सम्बोधित करते हैं। उनका मुख्य तर्क यह है कि दशरथ ने 'धर्म' का पालन किया (कैकेयी को दिया वचन निभाया) और इसी प्रक्रिया में उन्होंने राज्य भरत को दे दिया। वसिष्ठ का संकेत है कि यदि भरत राज्य स्वीकार नहीं करते, तो यह दशरथ के वचन को झूठा साबित करना होगा। 'धन धान्यवतीम्' कहकर वे राज्य की समृद्धि और जिम्मेदारी का अहसास करा रहे हैं कि ऐसी समृद्ध विरासत को अनाथ नहीं छोड़ा जा सकता।
