Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
नव नाग सहस्राणि कल्पितानि यथा विधि ।
अन्वयुर् भरतम् यान्तम् इक्ष्वाकु कुल नन्दनम् ॥ ॥२-८३-३॥
Nava nāga sahasrāṇi kalpitāni yathā vidhi । Anvayur bharatam yāntam ikṣvāku kula nandanam ॥ ॥2-83-3॥
Translation
Nine thousand elephants, duly caparisoned and decorated according to tradition, followed Bharata, the delight of the Ikshvaku lineage, as he departed.
हिंदी अनुवाद
इक्ष्वाकु कुल को आनन्दित करने वाले भरत के पीछे-पीछे, विधिवत सजाए गए नौ हजार हाथी चल पड़े।
English Commentary
This verse highlights the grandeur of the procession. The mention of nine thousand elephants (nāga) underscores the military might of Ayodhya. The phrase kalpitāni yathā vidhi (decorated according to rule) suggests that despite the sorrowful occasion, protocols were strictly adhered to; the elephants were caparisoned with howdahs and ornaments suitable for a royal expedition. Bharata is referred to as Ikṣvāku kula nandanam (the delight of the Ikshvaku race), implying that his actions—seeking to return the rightful heir—are upholding the dharma of his lineage. The massive retinue serves a dual purpose: providing protection through the dense forests and representing the state's resources being placed at Rama's disposal.

इस श्लोक में भरत की यात्रा की भव्यता और राजसी ठाठ-बाट का वर्णन है। 'नाग' शब्द का प्रयोग यहाँ हाथियों के लिए किया गया है। 'कल्पितानि यथा विधि' का अर्थ है कि हाथियों को युद्ध या राजसी यात्रा के नियमों के अनुसार पूर्ण रूप से सुसज्जित किया गया था। यद्यपि भरत राम को मनाने जा रहे हैं, न कि युद्ध करने, तथापि एक राजकुमार की सुरक्षा और मर्यादा के अनुरूप चतुरंगिणी सेना का यह अंग उनके साथ है। 'इक्ष्वाकु कुल नन्दनम्' विशेषण भरत के चरित्र को उजागर करता है; वे रघुकुल की कीर्ति बढ़ाने वाले हैं, और उनका यह प्रयास (राम को लौटाना) कुल की मर्यादा के अनुकूल ही है। यह सेना प्रदर्शन शक्ति का नहीं, अपितु राम के प्रति सम्मान और अयोध्या की राजसत्ता के समर्पण का प्रतीक है।
