Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अन्तर् दाहेन दहनः सम्तापयति राघवम् ।
वन दाह अभिसम्तप्तम् गूढो अग्निर् इव पादपम् ॥ ॥२-८५-१७॥
antar dāhena dahanaḥ samtāpayati rāghavam । vana dāha abhisamtaptam gūḍho agnir iva pādapam ॥ ॥2-85-17॥
Translation
Just as a hidden fire burns a tree from the inside within a forest that is ablaze, so did that fire of grief burn the Raghava (Bharata) internally through inner heat.

जैसे वन में लगी आग (दावानल) से तपते हुए वृक्ष को उसके कोटर (खोखले भाग) में छिपी हुई आग अंदर ही अंदर जलाती रहती है, वैसे ही वह शोक-रूपी अग्नि भरत (राघव) को अंदर ही अंदर जला रही थी।
English Commentary
A powerful metaphor for repressed grief and internal trauma. The "gūḍho agnir" is a fire hidden inside the hollow of a tree during a forest fire. While the external bark might still look intact, the core is being consumed. Similarly, Bharata maintains his composure externally for his army and Guha, but internally, the "antar dāha" (inner combustion) of grief is consuming him. He is burning without flames. This depicts the intense psychological pressure Bharata is under.

यहाँ एक अत्यंत सशक्त उपमा (Simile) है। 'गूढो अग्निर्' (छिपी हुई आग) वह आग है जो वृक्ष के अंदर सुलगती है, बाहर लपटें नहीं दिखतीं, पर वृक्ष अंदर से खाक हो जाता है। भरत की स्थिति वैसी ही है। बाहर से वे शांत और संयमित दिखते हैं, सेना का संचालन कर रहे हैं, पर अंदर 'अन्तर्दाहेन' (आंतरिक जलन) से जल रहे हैं। यह 'मनस्ताप' (mental agony) का उत्कृष्ट चित्रण है। वन की आग (बाहरी परिस्थितियां) तो है ही, पर आंतरिक अग्नि (राम के वियोग का दुःख) अधिक घातक है।
