मा भूत् स कालो यत् कष्टम् न माम् शन्कितुम् अर्हसि ।
राघवः स हि मे भ्राता ज्येष्ठः पितृ समः मम ॥ ॥२-८५-९॥
mā bhūt sa kālo yat kaṣṭam na mām śankitum arhasi । rāghavaḥ sa hi me bhrātā jyeṣṭhaḥ pitṛ samaḥ mama ॥ ॥2-85-9॥
Translation
"May such a wretched time never come! You ought not to suspect me. That Raghava (Rama) is indeed my eldest brother and is like a father to me."

"ऐसा कष्टदायी समय कभी न आए (जब मैं राम का अहित सोचूँ)! आपको मुझ पर शंका नहीं करनी चाहिए। वे राघव (राम) मेरे बड़े भाई हैं और मेरे लिए पिता के समान हैं।"
English Commentary
Bharata recoils at the very thought of harming Rama. The phrase "mā bhūt sa kālo" (let that time never be) implies that he would rather cease to exist than harbor ill will toward Rama. He dismantles the suspicion by defining his relationship with Rama not just as a sibling, but as pitṛ samaḥ (equal to a father). In the Vedic worldview, the eldest brother assumes the father's role, commanding absolute reverence. Bharata appeals to this Dharma, suggesting that attacking Rama would be akin to patricide, a sin impossible for him to commit.

भरत गुह की शंका का निवारण करते हुए कहते हैं कि राम का अहित सोचना तो दूर, ऐसा समय आने से पहले ही मृत्यु हो जाए तो अच्छा। 'मा भूत् स कालो' (वह समय न हो) एक मुहावरेदार अभिव्यक्ति है जो यह दर्शाती है कि ऐसा विचार भी पाप है। भरत राम के साथ अपने संबंध को स्पष्ट करते हैं—वे केवल भाई नहीं, 'पितृ समः' (पिता के तुल्य) हैं। भारतीय परंपरा में बड़े भाई को पिता का दर्जा दिया जाता है, और पिता से युद्ध करना या उनका अहित करना धर्म विरुद्ध है। भरत यहाँ अपनी मर्यादा और धर्म का उद्घोष कर रहे हैं।
