कथम् दाशरथौ भूमौ शयाने सह सीतया ।
शक्या निद्रा मया लब्धुम् जीवितम् वा सुखानि वा ॥ ॥२-८६-१०॥
Katham dāśarathau bhūmau śayāne saha sītayā । Śakyā nidrā mayā labdhum jīvitam vā sukhāni vā ॥ ॥2-86-10॥
Translation
While the son of Dasharatha (Rama) sleeps on the ground along with Sita, how is it possible for me to get sleep, to sustain my life, or to enjoy any comforts?

दशरथनंदन श्रीराम को सीता के साथ इस प्रकार जमीन पर सोता हुआ देखकर, मेरे लिए नींद लेना, जीवन धारण करना या किसी भी प्रकार के सुख को भोगना कैसे संभव हो सकता है?
English Commentary
This verse expresses the peak of Bharata’s guilt and profound love for his brother. Seeing Rama, the son of the great Emperor Dasharatha, sleeping on the bare earth alongside Sita, Bharata is tormented. He rhetorically asks how he can possibly indulge in sleep, enjoy life's pleasures, or even justify his continued existence while his superior brother suffers so. The contrast is stark: the prince deserving of silk and down is on the dirt. Bharata feels that accepting any comfort while Rama is in exile is a moral transgression. This sentiment forms the basis of Bharata’s resolve to live as an ascetic in Nandigram, mirroring Rama’s hardships, proving that his devotion is not merely verbal but deeply practiced.

यह श्लोक भरत की तीव्र आत्म-ग्लानि और भ्रातृ-प्रेम की पराकाष्ठा है। भरत, राम को कुश और पत्तों की शैया पर लेटा देखकर अत्यंत विचलित हैं। 'दाशरथौ' शब्द का प्रयोग यह याद दिलाने के लिए है कि जो महाराज दशरथ के पुत्र हैं और राजमहलों के अधिकारी हैं, उनकी यह दशा है। भरत प्रश्न करते हैं कि जब उनके बड़े भाई और भाभी ऐसी स्थिति में हैं, तो वे स्वयं महलों के सुख, भोजन या निद्रा कैसे स्वीकार कर सकते हैं? यहाँ तक कि 'जीवन' धारण करना भी उन्हें अपराधबोध से भर रहा है। यह श्लोक भरत के चरित्र की शुद्धता को रेखांकित करता है—वे राजभोग को विष के समान मान रहे हैं क्योंकि उनके आराध्य कष्ट में हैं। उनका विलाप केवल दिखावा नहीं, बल्कि उनके अंतर्मन की गहरी वेदना है।
