Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एवम् अस्माभिर् उक्तेन लक्ष्मणेन महात्मना ।
अनुनीता वयम् सर्वे धर्मम् एव अनुपश्यता ॥ ॥२-८६-९॥
Evam asmābhir uktena lakṣmaṇena mahātmanā । Anunītā vayam sarve dharmam eva anupaśyatā ॥ ॥2-86-9॥
Translation
The high-souled Lakshmana, who keeps his gaze fixed solely on Dharma, thus consoled all of us when addressed by us (in our grief).

धर्म पर ही दृष्टि रखने वाले उन महात्मा लक्ष्मण ने, हमारे द्वारा इस प्रकार कहे जाने पर (और संताप करने पर), हम सभी को सांत्वना दी।
English Commentary
In this verse, Bharata recounts to Guha the fortitude of Lakshmana. Despite the harrowing circumstances of sleeping on the bare ground and living the life of ascetics, Lakshmana remained the pillar of strength. Bharata notes that while they were grieving, Lakshmana, whose focus remains unswervingly on Dharma (righteousness/duty), offered them consolation. The phrase "Dharmam eva anupaśyatā" (looking only at Dharma) highlights Lakshmana's philosophical stance: he views the physical hardships not as suffering, but as a necessary toll for upholding the truth and their father's honor. Bharata acknowledges that Lakshmana’s ability to comfort others stems from this high moral ground, contrasting his own emotional turmoil with Lakshmana’s stoic adherence to duty.

इस श्लोक में भरत, निषादराज गुह से लक्ष्मण के चरित्र की दृढ़ता का वर्णन कर रहे हैं। जब राम, सीता और लक्ष्मण वन में कष्ट सहन कर रहे थे, तब भरत अपनी ग्लानि और शोक प्रकट करते हैं। भरत कहते हैं कि महात्मा लक्ष्मण, जो धर्म के मर्मज्ञ हैं, उन्होंने शोक में डूबे हुए हम सभी को ढाढस बंधाया। यहाँ 'अनुनीता' का अर्थ है समझाना या सांत्वना देना। लक्ष्मण का दृष्टिकोण सदैव धर्मकेंद्रित रहता है; वे जानते हैं कि राम का वनवास पिता के वचन और सत्य की रक्षा के लिए है। इसलिए, शारीरिक कष्टों को वे धर्म पालन के समक्ष तुच्छ मानते हैं। भरत यह स्वीकार करते हैं कि लक्ष्मण का वैराग्य और धर्म के प्रति निष्ठा उनसे (भरत से) कहीं अधिक व्यावहारिक और दृढ़ है। यह भरत की विनम्रता और लक्ष्मण के प्रति उनके आदर को दर्शाता है।
