Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अस्मिन् प्रव्राजिते राजा न चिरम् वर्तयिष्यति ।
विधवा मेदिनी नूनम् क्षिप्रम् एव भविष्यति ॥ ॥२-८६-१३॥
Asmin pravrājite rājā na ciram vartayiṣyati । Vidhavā medinī nūnam kṣipram eva bhaviṣyati ॥ ॥2-86-13॥
Translation
With him (Rama) exiled, the King will not survive for long. Indeed, the Earth will surely become a widow very soon.

इनके (राम के) वनवास चले जाने पर महाराज अधिक समय तक जीवित नहीं रहेंगे। और निश्चित ही, यह पृथ्वी शीघ्र ही विधवा हो जाएगी।
English Commentary
With heavy foresight, Bharata predicts the inevitable consequence of Rama's exile. He asserts that with Rama sent away (pravrājite), King Dasharatha cannot sustain his life for long. The metaphor used here is powerful: "The Earth will become a widow" (Vidhavā medinī). In Sanskrit tradition, the King is the husband or protector of the Earth (Bhūpati). If Dasharatha dies and Rama is exiled, the land is left without its lord, akin to a woman losing her husband. This reflects Bharata’s terrifying realization that the kingdom faces a total leadership vacuum and distinct catastrophe, all stemming from the actions taken by his own mother.

भरत अपनी दूरदर्शिता से भविष्य का आंकलन कर रहे हैं, जो दुर्भाग्यवश सत्य है। वे जानते हैं कि दशरथ के प्राण राम में ही बसते हैं। 'प्रव्राजिते' का अर्थ है वन में निर्वासित हो जाना। भरत कहते हैं कि राम के वियोग में पिता का अंत निश्चित है। यहाँ पृथ्वी (मेदिनी) के 'विधवा' होने का रूपक अत्यंत सशक्त है। राजा को पृथ्वी का पति माना जाता है (भूपति)। दशरथ की मृत्यु के बाद, और राम की अनुपस्थिति में, पृथ्वी बिना रक्षक के अनाथ और विधवा जैसी हो जाएगी। यह श्लोक राज्य की आसन्न अराजकता और शोक की पूर्वसूचना देता है। भरत को इस बात का गहरा दुःख है कि उनकी माँ कैकेयी के कृत्य के कारण पूरा राष्ट्र अनाथ होने वाला है।
