परिदेवयमानस्य तस्य एवम् सुमहात्मनः ।
तिष्ठतो राज पुत्रस्य शर्वरी सा अत्यवर्तत ॥२-८६-२३॥
Paridevayamānasya tasya evam sumahātmanaḥ । Tiṣṭhato rāja putrasya śarvarī sā atyavartata ॥ ॥2-86-23॥
Translation
While the high-souled prince (Bharata) was lamenting in this manner, seated there, that night passed away.

इस प्रकार विलाप करते हुए और (वहां) बैठे हुए उन महामना राजपुत्र (भरत) की वह रात बीत गई।
English Commentary
This verse marks a narrative transition. It states that the night passed (śarvarī sā atyavartata) while Bharata was still absorbed in his grief. The use of the word tiṣṭhato (standing or seated/staying) suggests he might not have slept at all, keeping a vigil in his sorrow. The narrator refers to him as sumahātmanaḥ (the very high-souled one), validating Bharata's emotions as noble rather than weak. His lamentation is a spiritual exercise of devotion. The verse bridges the conversation with Guha at night to the actions that take place the next morning.

यह एक कथा-सूत्र श्लोक है जो समय परिवर्तन को दर्शाता है। भरत अपने दुःख और विचारों में इतने लीन थे कि उन्हें समय का भान ही नहीं रहा। 'परिदेवयमानस्य' का अर्थ है शोक या विलाप करना। यद्यपि भरत शारीरिक रूप से थके हुए थे, उनका मन शांत नहीं था। 'तिष्ठतो' (बैठे हुए) शब्द इंगित करता है कि शायद उन्होंने शयन भी नहीं किया, बस बैठकर रात काट दी। वाल्मीकि उन्हें 'सुमहात्मनः' (महान आत्मा) कहते हैं, क्योंकि उनका यह विलाप स्वार्थ के लिए नहीं, बल्कि भ्रातृ-प्रेम और धर्म के लिए था। सूर्योदय के साथ अब कथा अगले चरण में प्रवेश करती है।
