Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
उचितो अयम् जनः सर्वे दुह्खानाम् त्वम् सुख उचितः ।
धर्म आत्ममः तस्य गुप्त्य् अर्थम् जागरिष्यामहे वयम् ॥ ॥२-८६-४॥
ucito ayam janaḥ sarve duḥkhānām tvam sukha ucitaḥ । dharma ātmamaḥ tasya gupty artham jāgariṣyāmahe vayam ॥ ॥2-86-4॥
Translation
"All of us people here are accustomed to hardships, whereas you are deserving of comfort. O righteous one! We shall keep awake for the sake of his (Rama’s) protection."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हम सब लोग (वनवासी) तो दुखों (कष्टों) को सहने के अभ्यस्त (उचितः) हैं, परंतु आप सुख भोगने के योग्य हैं। हे धर्मात्मा! उस (राम) की रक्षा के लिए हम लोग जागेंगे।"
English Commentary
Guha argues based on adaptability and class. He identifies himself and his tribals as accustomed to hardship ("duḥkhānām ucitaḥ"), implying that the rugged forest life is normal for them. In contrast, Lakshmana is royalty, "sukha ucitaḥ" (accustomed to/deserving of comfort). Guha offers to take over the night watch ("jāgariṣyāmahe vayam") so Lakshmana can sleep, appealing to Lakshmana’s status as a "Dharma-ātmā" (righteous soul) who should preserve his strength. It shows Guha’s eagerness to serve.

गुह यहाँ अपनी और लक्ष्मण की जीवनशैली का अंतर स्पष्ट करते हैं। वे कहते हैं 'उचितो अयम् जनः दुःखानाम्'—हम वनवासी कष्ट सहने के आदी हैं, हमारे लिए जागना या जमीन पर सोना आम बात है। लेकिन लक्ष्मण राजकुमार हैं, वे 'सुख उचितः' (सुख के योग्य) हैं। गुह प्रस्ताव देते हैं कि वे और उनके सैनिक पहरा देंगे ('जागरिष्यामहे वयम्'), ताकि लक्ष्मण सो सकें। यह गुह की विनम्रता है कि वे राजकुमार को कष्ट नहीं देना चाहते और स्वयं सेवा का भार उठाना चाहते हैं।
