गुहस्य वचनम् श्रुत्वा भरतो भृशम् अप्रियम् ।
ध्यानम् जगाम तत्र एव यत्र तत् श्रुतम् अप्रियम् ॥२-८७-१॥
Guhasya vacanam śrutvā bharato bhṛśam apriyam । Dhyānam jagāma tatra eva yatra tat śrutam apriyam ॥ ॥2-87-1॥
Translation
Hearing the extremely unpleasant words of Guha, Bharata fell into deep thought (or a stupor of grief) right there where he had heard that unpleasant news.

गुह के (राम के कष्टों संबंधी) अत्यंत अप्रिय वचनों को सुनकर, भरत वहीं पर—जहाँ उन्होंने वह दुखद समाचार सुना था—गहन चिंता (या मूर्छा जैसी शून्यता) में डूब गए।
English Commentary
The new canto begins by describing the immediate impact of Guha’s narrative on Bharata. While Guha meant to report the facts, the details of Rama sleeping on the ground and matting his hair were bhṛśam apriyam (exceedingly unpleasant/unbearable) to Bharata. Upon hearing this, he slipped into dhyānam—here meaning a state of stunned silence or deep, paralyzing brooding. He was rooted to the spot where he received the news. It highlights Bharata’s sensitivity; the reality of his brother's hardship is a heavy blow to his psyche.

नए सर्ग का प्रारंभ भरत की प्रतिक्रिया से होता है। गुह ने तो राम की वीरता और अपनी सेवा का वर्णन किया था, किन्तु भरत के लिए राम का घास पर सोना और जटा धारण करना 'भृशम् अप्रियम्' (अत्यंत अप्रिय) था। कोमल हृदय भरत इस कठोर सत्य को सहन नहीं कर सके। 'ध्यानम् जगाम' का अर्थ यहाँ केवल 'सोचना' नहीं है, बल्कि एक ऐसी स्तब्धता है जहाँ मन सुन्न हो जाता है। वे जहाँ खड़े/बैठे थे, वहीं पत्थर की मूरत की तरह जम गए। यह उनके मानसिक आघात की तीव्रता को दर्शाता है।
