ततः सर्वाः समापेतुर् मातरो भरतस्य ताः ।
उपवास कृशा दीना भर्तृ व्यसन कर्शिताः ॥२-८७-६॥
Tataḥ sarvāḥ samāpetur mātaro bharatasya tāḥ । Upavāsa kṛśā dīnā bhartṛ vyasana karśitāḥ ॥ ॥2-87-6॥
Translation
Then, all those mothers of Bharata arrived there; they were emaciated from fasting, miserable, and tormented by the calamity that had befallen their husband.

तदनंतर, भरत की वे सभी माताएं वहां आ पहुंचीं, जो उपवास के कारण दुर्बल, दीन (दुखी) और पति (दशरथ) के मरण रूपी संकट से पीड़ित थीं।
English Commentary
Alerted by the commotion, the Queens arrive. They are collectively referred to as "Bharata's mothers." Their condition is pitiful: emaciated from fasting (upavāsa kṛśā) and wretched (dīnā). They are already tormented by the tragedy of their husband’s death (bhartṛ vyasana). The verse paints a picture of a group of women who have lost their protector and are now physically and emotionally drained. Their arrival at the scene where Bharata lies unconscious adds a layer of collective family tragedy to individual grief.

शत्रुघ्न का रोना सुनकर रनिवास की स्त्रियाँ वहां आ जाती हैं। यहाँ 'सर्वाः मातरो' (सभी माताएं) कहा गया है, जिसमें कौसल्या, सुमित्रा और कैकेयी सभी शामिल हैं। उनकी शारीरिक स्थिति का वर्णन करुण है—'उपवास कृशा' (व्रत/भूख से कमजोर)। वे 'भर्तृ व्यसन' (पति पर आई विपत्ति/मृत्यु) से पहले ही टूटी हुई हैं। भरत का गिरना उनके दुखों में एक और वज्रपात जैसा है। यह श्लोक राजपरिवार की वर्तमान दयनीय स्थिति को दर्शाता है—वे रानियाँ जो कभी वैभव में रहती थीं, आज धूल और आंसुओं के बीच हैं।
