Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अश्रद्धेयम् इदम् लोके न सत्यम् प्रतिभाति मा ।
मुह्यते खलु मे भावः स्वप्नो अयम् इति मे मतिः ॥ ॥२-८८-१०॥
Aśraddheyam idam loke na satyam pratibhāti mā । Muhyate khalu me bhāvaḥ svapno ayam iti me matiḥ ॥ ॥2-88-10॥
Translation
"This appears incredible in this world; it does not seem true to me. My mind is indeed bewildered; I feel that this is surely a dream."

"यह सब लोक में अविश्वसनीय (अश्रद्धेय) है; मुझे यह सत्य प्रतीत नहीं हो रहा है। मेरा मन मोहित (भ्रमित) हो रहा है; मेरी बुद्धि कहती है कि यह निश्चय ही कोई स्वप्न है।"
English Commentary
Bharata experiences a moment of derealization. The cognitive dissonance between Rama’s status and his situation is so vast that Bharata’s mind rejects the evidence of his senses. Aśraddheyam (unbelievable) captures the absurdity of the event. He retreats into the hypothesis of a svapna (dream/nightmare) because the waking reality is too painful to process. The phrase muhyate khalu me bhāvaḥ (my being is bewildered) indicates a state of shock. It is a psychological defense mechanism; if this is a dream, he can wake up, and Rama will still be King. It highlights the surreal nature of the tragedy.

अत्यधिक शोक की स्थिति में मनुष्य अक्सर वास्तविकता को नकारने (denial) का प्रयास करता है। भरत की मनोदशा ठीक वैसी ही है। 'अश्रद्धेयम्' (जिस पर श्रद्धा/विश्वास न किया जा सके) – भरत अपनी आँखों पर विश्वास नहीं कर पा रहे हैं। इंगुदी का पेड़, कुश की शैया, राम की अनुपस्थिति – यह सब इतना अवास्तविक है कि उन्हें लगता है वे कोई बुरा सपना देख रहे हैं। 'मुह्यते' (मोहित/भ्रमित होना) शब्द मानसिक आघात (trauma) को दर्शाता है। एक राजकुमार का अचानक वनवासी बन जाना तर्क से परे है। भरत की यह उक्ति उनके मानसिक संतुलन के डगमगाने का संकेत है, जहाँ सत्य इतना कड़वा है कि उसे स्वीकारना असंभव लग रहा है।
