Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
इयम् शय्या मम भ्रातुर् इदम् हि परिवर्तितम् ।
स्थण्डिले कठिने सर्वम् गात्रैर् विमृदितम् तृणम् ॥ ॥२-८८-१३॥
Iyam śayyā mama bhrātur idam hi parivartitam । Sthaṇḍile kaṭhine sarvam gātrair vimṛditam tṛṇam ॥ ॥2-88-13॥
Translation
"This is the bed of my brother. Here indeed are the marks of his turning over. On this hard ground, all the grass has been crushed by his limbs."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"यह मेरे भाई (राम) की शैया है। यहाँ (उनके) करवट बदलने के चिह्न स्पष्ट हैं। इस कठोर भूमि पर बिछी हुई सारी घास उनके अंगों (के दबाव) से कुचल गई है।"
English Commentary
This verse is a forensic examination of the scene. Bharata observes the parivartitam—the signs of tossing and turning. The bed is not just a place of rest, but a record of a sleepless night. The phrase sthaṇḍile kaṭhine (on the hard ground) explains why the grass is vimṛditam (crushed/trampled). Rama, unaccustomed to such hardship, could not find comfort. Bharata reads the physical disturbances in the grass as a script of his brother's suffering. It transforms the inanimate grass into a living testimony of the agony endured by the King.

भरत एक गुप्तचर की भांति शैया का निरीक्षण कर रहे हैं। 'मम भ्रातुर्' (मेरे भाई की) – यहाँ आत्मीयता और दर्द है। 'परिवर्तितम्' (करवट बदलना) यह दर्शाता है कि श्रीराम को नींद नहीं आई होगी। कठोर ज़मीन पर नींद न आना स्वाभाविक है। 'विमृदितम् तृणम्' (कुचली हुई घास) गवाह है कि श्रीराम रात भर बेचैन रहे। भरत कल्पना कर सकते हैं कि कोमल शरीर वाले राम को उस खुरदरी घास ने कितना कष्ट दिया होगा। यह दृश्य प्रमाण भरत के हृदय को चीर रहा है क्योंकि वे जानते हैं कि इस बेचैनी का कारण परोक्ष रूप से वे स्वयं हैं।
