Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अब्रवीद् जननीः सर्वा इह तेन महात्मना ।
शर्वरी शयिता भूमाउ इदम् अस्य विमर्दितम् ॥ ॥२-८८-२॥
Abravīd jananīḥ sarvā iha tena mahātmanā । Śarvarī śayitā bhūmau idam asya vimarditam ॥ ॥2-88-2॥
Translation
He spoke to all the mothers: "Here, that great soul (Rama) spent the night sleeping on the ground. Look, this spot has been crushed by his turning limbs."
हिंदी अनुवाद
भरत ने सब माताओं से कहा—"उस महात्मा (श्रीराम) ने यहाँ जमीन पर लेटकर रात बिताई है। देखिए, यह स्थान उनके करवट बदलने से (अंग-संचालन से) दब गया है (विमर्दित हो गया है)।"
English Commentary
Bharata addresses the mothers, drawing their attention to the minute details of the bedding. He points out the vimarditam (crushed/impressed) grass, which serves as a forensic proof of Rama's presence and restless sleep. By showing this to the mothers (including Kaikeyi), Bharata forces a confrontation with the consequences of the exile. The phrase idamasya (this is his) makes the suffering possessive and personal. Bharata reads the language of the crushed grass—he sees the tossing and turning of his brother, translating the physical imprint on the ground into emotional impact for the onlookers.

भरत का माताओं को यह दृश्य दिखाना अत्यंत करुण है। विशेषकर कौशल्या और कैकेयी को यह दिखाना कि उनके सुकुमार पुत्र ने कहाँ रात बिताई। 'विमर्दितम्' (कुचला हुआ/दबा हुआ) शब्द यहाँ बहुत शक्तिशाली है। यह उस घास की स्थिति को बताता है जो श्रीराम के शरीर के भार से दब गई थी। भरत मानो उन निशानों में श्रीराम के शरीर की छाप देख रहे हैं। वे 'महात्मना' शब्द का प्रयोग करते हैं, जो यह बताता है कि इतनी कठिनाई सहने के बाद भी श्रीराम की आत्मा महान और स्थिर है, परन्तु भरत का हृदय इसे देखकर विदीर्ण हो रहा है।
