tarantaḥ sma prakāśante sadhvajā iva parvatāḥ ॥2-89-18॥
Translation
The elephants, urged on by their riders and adorned with banners, appeared while swimming like mountains with flags (or winged mountains).

महावतों द्वारा प्रेरित किए गए, पताकाओं से युक्त हाथी तैरते हुए ऐसे सुशोभित हो रहे थे जैसे पंख वाले (या ध्वज युक्त) पर्वत हों।
English Commentary
Valmiki employs a classic simile here, comparing the swimming elephants to mountains (parvatāḥ). The imagery is visual: only the tops of the elephants and their banners (savaijayantā) are visible above the waterline, moving with a massive grace that mimics floating hills. The phrase gajārohapracoditāḥ (urged by the elephant riders) indicates the control required to make land animals navigate a rushing river like the Ganga. This contributes to the description of the army's grandeur, reinforcing that Bharata's retinue possesses the might of a conquering force, though their mission is peaceful.

वाल्मीकि यहाँ उपमा अलंकार का प्रयोग करते हैं। प्राचीन साहित्य में हाथियों की तुलना अक्सर पर्वतों से की जाती है। चूँकि हाथियों के शरीर का अधिकांश भाग पानी में डूबा होता है और केवल ऊपरी भाग तथा ध्वज दिखाई देते हैं, वे जल में तैरते हुए पर्वतों जैसे प्रतीत होते हैं। 'ग Jasper шул / Prachodyta' स्पष्ट करता है कि हाथी स्वयं नहीं, बल्कि महावतों के निर्देश पर नदी पार कर रहे थे। यह दृश्य की भव्यता और भय-मिश्रित सौंदर्य को बढ़ाता है। पौराणिक संदर्भ में, यह प्राचीन काल के पंख वाले उड़ते पर्वतों की याद भी दिलाता है।
