गृह्णीयामिति तत्तेन तथेत्युक्तं महात्मना ।
अनभिज्ञा ह्यहं देवि त्वयैव कथितं पुरा ॥ ॥२-९-१८॥
gṛhṇīyāmiti tattena tathetyuktaṃ mahātmanā |
anabhijñā hyahaṃ devi tvayaiva kathitaṃ purā ॥2-9-18॥
Translation
When you said, 'I shall take them [later],' that high-souled King replied, 'So be it.' I was indeed unaware of this, O Queen; it was you yourself who told me this long ago.
हिंदी अनुवाद
'(मैं ये वरदान बाद में) ले लूँगी', ऐसा कहने पर उन महात्मा (दशरथ) ने 'तथास्तु' (वैसा ही हो) कह दिया था। हे देवि! मैं तो इस बात से अनजान थी, तुमने ही पहले मुझे यह बात बताई थी।
English Commentary
In this verse, Manthara validates her strategy by grounding it in Kaikeyi's own past admissions. By referring to King Dasharatha as 'Mahatmana' (high-souled), she acknowledges his adherence to truth, implying that he cannot go back on his word ('Tatha' or 'So be it') once given. Crucially, Manthara states she was 'unaware' of this incident until Kaikeyi herself told her. This is a psychological masterstroke; by attributing the knowledge of the boons to Kaikeyi, Manthara proves she is not fabricating a scheme but merely reminding the Queen of her own forgotten power. It highlights the deep confidante relationship between them, where Kaikeyi shared such intimate state secrets. Manthara uses this shared memory to press Kaikeyi to claim what is rightfully hers, turning Kaikeyi's own history into a weapon against Rama's coronation.

यहाँ मंथरा अपनी कूटनीति की विश्वसनीयता सिद्ध कर रही है। वह कैकेयी को याद दिलाती है कि महाराज दशरथ, जो 'महात्मा' हैं और अपने वचन के पक्के हैं, उन्होंने कैकेयी के वरदानों को भविष्य के लिए सुरक्षित रखने की अनुमति 'तथास्तु' कहकर दी थी। सबसे महत्वपूर्ण बात यह है कि मंथरा यह स्वीकार करती है कि वह स्वयं इस घटना की साक्षी नहीं थी ('अनभिज्ञा ह्यहं'), बल्कि यह गुप्त बात स्वयं कैकेयी ने ही उसे पहले बताई थी। ऐसा कहकर मंथरा दो बातें सिद्ध करती है: पहली, यह कि वरदानों की बात सत्य है क्योंकि यह कैकेयी के मुख से ही निकली थी; और दूसरी, कि कैकेयी का उस पर कितना विश्वास रहा है। वह कैकेयी के ही शब्दों और स्मृतियों का प्रयोग करके उसे उकसा रही है कि जो अधिकार (वरदान) उसने स्वयं सुरक्षित रखवाए थे, अब उनका उपयोग करने का समय आ गया है।
