मास्मैनं प्रत्युदीक्षेथा मा चैनमभिभाषथाः ।
रुदन्ती चापि तं दृष्ट्वा जगत्यां शोकलालसा ॥ ॥२-९-२३॥
māsmainaṃ pratyudīkṣethā mā cainamabhibhāṣathāḥ |
rudantī cāpi taṃ dṛṣṭvā jagatyāṃ śokalālasā ॥2-9-23॥
Translation
Do not look towards him [when he arrives], nor speak to him. Upon seeing him, just keep weeping, lying on the floor, completely immersed in grief.

जब वे (महाराज दशरथ) तुम्हारे पास आएं, तो न तो तुम उनकी ओर देखना और न ही उनसे कोई बात करना। उन्हें देखकर तुम केवल रोती रहना और शोक में डूबी हुई उस जमीन पर ही पड़ी रहना।
English Commentary
In this verse, Manthara dictates the precise behavior Kaikeyi must adopt to manipulate King Dasharatha emotionally. Knowing the King's deep affection for Kaikeyi, Manthara advises a complete reversal of the Queen's usual loving demeanor. She instructs Kaikeyi to employ the 'silent treatment'—neither looking at him ('pratyudikshethah') nor speaking to him ('abhibhashathah'). This denial of connection is calculated to induce panic in the King. Usually greeted with warmth, Dasharatha will be devastated to find his beloved queen weeping ('rudanti') and rolling on the dusty floor ('jagatyām'), utterly consumed by grief ('shokalalasa'). Manthara understands that this visual of despair, combined with cold silence, will break Dasharatha's resistance instantly, forcing him to beg for the reason for her sorrow. By advising Kaikeyi to withhold her gaze and voice, Manthara ensures that the King is emotionally disarmed before the negotiation for the boons even begins.

मंथरा यहाँ कैकेयी को 'मनोवैज्ञानिक युद्ध' (psychological warfare) के पेंतरे सिखा रही है। वह जानती है कि महाराज दशरथ कैकेयी के प्रेम में कितने आसक्त हैं। सामान्यतः जब महाराज आते थे, तो कैकेयी उनका स्वागत मुस्कान और प्रिय वचनों से करती थीं। मंथरा इस व्यवहार के ठीक विपरीत करने का निर्देश देती है। 'मास्मैनं प्रत्युदीक्षेथा' (उनकी ओर देखना भी मत) और 'मा चैनमभिभाषथाः' (बात भी मत करना)—यह मौन और उपेक्षा महाराज के लिए किसी भी शस्त्र से अधिक घातक होगी। मंथरा को विश्वास है कि जब दशरथ अपनी सबसे प्रिय रानी को, जो हमेशा सज-धज कर रहती थी, इस प्रकार जमीन पर लोटते और विलाप करते देखेंगे, तो उनका धैर्य टूट जाएगा। वे यह जानने के लिए व्याकुल हो उठेंगे कि उनकी प्रियतमा के इस दुःख का कारण क्या है, और इसी व्याकुलता का लाभ उठाकर कैकेयी अपने वरदान मांग सकेगी। यह श्लोक दर्शाता है कि मंथरा को मानवीय भावनाओं और दुर्बलताओं की कितनी गहरी समझ थी।
