यौ तौ दैवासुरे युद्धे वरौ दशरथोऽददात् ।
तौ स्मारय महाभागे सोऽर्थो मा त्वामतिक्रमेत् ॥२-९-२८॥
yau tau daivāsure yuddhe varau daśaratho'dadāt |
tau smāraya mahābhāge so'rtho mā tvāmatikramet ॥2-9-28॥
Translation
O illustrious one! Remind him of those two boons that Dasharatha granted you during the war between the Devas and Asuras. Let not this object (opportunity) slip away from you.

हे महाभागे (भाग्यशालिनी)! देवासुर संग्राम में महाराज दशरथ ने जो दो वर तुम्हें दिए थे, तुम उन्हें उन दो वरों का स्मरण कराओ। (ध्यान रखो) वह प्रयोजन (अवसर) तुम्हारे हाथ से निकल न जाए।
English Commentary
This verse marks a critical pivot in the Ramayana narrative. Manthara moves from general persuasion to a specific, binding strategy. She instructs Kaikeyi to invoke the 'two boons' (Varau) granted by King Dasharatha years ago during the celestial war between the Devas and Asuras. In that battle, Kaikeyi had saved the King's life, earning his eternal gratitude and a promise of two boons, which she had reserved for a later time.
By addressing Kaikeyi as 'Mahabhage' (O illustrious one), Manthara reinforces the Queen's status and her right to these claims. She warns Kaikeyi that timing is everything; the instruction 'let not this object slip' implies that if this moment of the King's vulnerability passes without the boons being claimed, the opportunity to secure Bharata's future will be lost forever. Manthara is essentially weaponizing the King's past integrity against him, ensuring he cannot retreat from his promise.

यह श्लोक रामायण की कथा का एक अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण मोड़ है। यहाँ मंथरा केवल उकसा नहीं रही, अपितु कैकेयी को वह अमोघ अस्त्र सौंप रही है जिससे दशरथ बंध जाएंगे। वह कैकेयी को उस प्राचीन देवासुर संग्राम की याद दिलाती है जहाँ कैकेयी ने राजा दशरथ के प्राण बचाए थे और बदले में राजा ने उन्हें दो वर देने का वचन दिया था। कैकेयी ने उस समय वे वर नहीं मांगे थे और उन्हें धरोहर के रूप में रख छोड़ा था।
मंथरा 'महाभागे' संबोधन का प्रयोग कर कैकेयी का आत्मविश्वास बढ़ाती है। वह आग्रह करती है कि यही सही समय है जब उन दो वरों की मांग की जाए। मंथरा का यह कहना कि 'वह प्रयोजन तुम्हारे हाथ से निकल न जाए', यह दर्शाता है कि राजनीति में समय का कितना महत्व है; यदि आज कैकेयी ने यह अवसर गंवा दिया, तो भरत के लिए राज्य प्राप्त करने का स्वप्न कभी पूरा नहीं हो पाएगा। यहाँ से कथा विशुद्ध रूप से राजा के वचन और धर्म-संकट की ओर मुड़ती है।
