Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
यदा तु ते वरं दद्यात्स्वयमुत्थाप्य राघवः ।
व्यवस्थाप्य महाराजं तमिमं वृणुया वरम् ॥२-९-२९॥
yadā tu te varaṃ dadyātsvayamutthāpya rāghavaḥ |
vyavasthāpya mahārājaṃ tamimaṃ vṛṇuyā varam ॥2-9-29॥
Translation
When the scion of Raghu (King Dasharatha) himself raises you up and offers to grant a boon, then, having firmly bound the Great King (to his promise), ask for this boon.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जब रघुनंदन (राजा दशरथ) स्वयं तुम्हें (भूमि से) उठाकर वर देने को तैयार हों, तब महाराज को (प्रतिज्ञा में) भली-भाँति स्थिर (बाध्य) करके तुम उनसे यह वर माँगना।
English Commentary
In this verse, Manthara provides specific 'stage directions' for Kaikeyi's acting in the Kopabhavan (Chamber of Wrath). She anticipates that Dasharatha will be distressed to see his queen lying on the bare floor. Manthara instructs Kaikeyi to wait until the King physically lifts her up ('utthāpya') and voluntarily offers a boon to appease her.
The crucial instruction here is 'Vyavasthapya', which means to fix, settle, or bind firmly. Manthara advises Kaikeyi not to reveal her desire immediately, but to first ensure the King is irrevocably committed to his promise. She must corner him into a position where he cannot retreat from his word. It is important to note that 'Raghava' in this context refers to King Dasharatha (the descendant of Raghu), not Rama. Manthara ensures that the emotional leverage is maximized before the political demand is made.

इस श्लोक में मंथरा, कैकेयी को 'कोपभवन' की रणनीति का सूक्ष्मता से पाठ पढ़ा रही है। वह जानती है कि कैकेयी को भूमि पर पड़ा देख राजा दशरथ विचलित हो जाएंगे और उन्हें मनाने का प्रयास करेंगे। मंथरा निर्देश देती है कि जब राजा स्वयं उन्हें स्पर्श करें और उठाएं, केवल तभी बात आगे बढ़ानी है। यहाँ 'राघव' शब्द का प्रयोग राजा दशरथ के लिए हुआ है, जो रघुकुल के वंशज हैं।
