तथा प्रोत्साहिता देवी गता मन्थरया सह ।
क्रोधागारं विशालाक्षी सौभाग्यमदगर्विता ॥२-९-५५॥
tathā prot sāhitā devī gatā mantharayā saha |
krodhāgāraṁ viśālākṣī saubhāgyamadagarvitā ॥2-9-55॥
Translation
Thus incited (by Manthara), the large-eyed queen Kaikeyi, who was proud of her good fortune (love for her husband), went to the anger room with Manthara.

इस प्रकार (मन्थरा द्वारा) उकसायी गई वह विशाल नेत्रों वाली (विशालाक्षी) देवी कैकेयी, जो अपने सौभाग्य (पति-प्रेम) के मद में गर्वित (चूर) थीं, मन्थरा के साथ कोपभवन (क्रोध-कक्ष) में गईं।
English Commentary
The use of adjectives in the Valmiki Ramayana is very meaningful. Here, two adjectives used for Kaikeyi clarify the entire situation: 'Vishalakshi' (large-eyed): This is a description of physical beauty, but there is a sharp irony hidden here. One with such large and beautiful eyes has become completely 'blind' to reality and righteousness. Her outer eyes are open, but the eyes of conscience are closed. 'Saubhagyamadagarvita' (proud of good fortune): This is the most important word in this verse. 'Saubhagyamadagarvita' here means her husband's exclusive love. Kaikeyi knew that King Dasharatha loved her the most and would not refuse any of her requests. This love instilled in her 'mad' (intoxication/arrogance). If she had not had so much faith in the king's love, she would never have dared to rebel so severely. She went to the "Krodhagar" (wrath house) not because she was sad, but because she was proud of her influence. She was going to use this love as a weapon. This verse teaches that when love takes the form of "ego," it becomes destructive. Kaikeyi used her "good fortune" to invite her own "vaidhavya" (widowhood).

वाल्मीकि रामायण में विशेषणों का प्रयोग बहुत अर्थपूर्ण होता है। यहाँ कैकेयी के लिए प्रयुक्त दो विशेषण पूरी स्थिति को स्पष्ट करते हैं: 'विशालाक्षी' (बड़े नेत्रों वाली): यह एक शारीरिक सौंदर्य का वर्णन है, किन्तु यहाँ एक तीखी विडंबना (Irony) छिपी है। जिसके नेत्र इतने विशाल और सुंदर हैं, वह वास्तविकता और धर्म को देखने में पूरी तरह 'अंधी' हो चुकी है। उसके बाहरी नेत्र खुले हैं, पर विवेक के नेत्र बंद हो चुके हैं। 'सौभाग्यमदगर्विता' (सौभाग्य के मद में गर्वित): यह इस श्लोक का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण शब्द है। 'सौभाग्य' का अर्थ यहाँ पति का अनन्य प्रेम है। कैकेयी जानती थीं कि राजा दशरथ उनसे सर्वाधिक प्रेम करते हैं और उनकी कोई बात नहीं टालेंगे। इसी प्रेम का उन्हें 'मद' (नशा/अहंकार) था। यदि उन्हें राजा के प्रेम पर इतना भरोसा न होता, तो वह इतना बड़ा विद्रोह करने का साहस कभी नहीं कर पातीं। वह 'क्रोधागार' (कोपभवन) में इसलिए नहीं गईं कि वह दुखी थीं, बल्कि इसलिए गईं क्योंकि उन्हें अपने प्रभाव पर घमंड था। वह इस प्रेम को एक हथियार की तरह इस्तेमाल करने जा रही थीं। यह श्लोक सिखाता है कि जब प्रेम 'अहंकार' का रूप ले लेता है, तो वह विनाशकारी हो जाता है। कैकेयी ने अपने 'सौभाग्य' का प्रयोग अपने ही 'वैधव्य' (विधवापन) को आमंत्रित करने के लिए किया।
