कच्चिन्न तस्यापापस्य पापं कर्तुमिहेच्छसि ।
अकण्टकं भोक्तुमना राज्यं तस्यानुजस्य च ॥२-९०-१३॥
kaccinna tasyāpāpasya pāpaṃ kartumihecchasi |
akaṇṭakaṃ bhoktumanā rājyaṃ tasyānujasya ca ॥2-90-13॥
Translation
"I hope you do not wish to commit any sin (harm) against that sinless one and his younger brother here, with the intention of enjoying a thornless kingdom?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"क्या तुम उस निष्पाप (राम) और उनके छोटे भाई (लक्ष्मण) का कोई अनिष्ट (पाप) करने की इच्छा से तो यहाँ नहीं आए हो? ताकि तुम निष्कंटक राज्य का भोग कर सको?"
English Commentary
This is the climax of the confrontation. Bharadwaja articulates the worst-case scenario: that Bharata has come to eliminate the rival claimant to the throne to ensure his rule is akaṇṭakaṃ (without thorns/obstacles). Referring to Rama as apāpasya (the sinless one) heightens the moral stakes; harming him would be an unpardonable crime. This brutal honesty from the Sage gives Bharata the platform to vehemently deny it and reveal his true, noble intent. It is a necessary friction to bring out the purity of Bharata's devotion.

यह संदेह की पराकाष्ठा है। ऋषि सीधे पूछते हैं कि कहीं तुम राम को मारने ('पापं कर्तुम्') तो नहीं आए ताकि तुम्हारा राज्य 'अकण्टक' (कांटों/बाधाओं से मुक्त) हो जाए। राजनीति में अक्सर सत्ता के लिए भाइयों की हत्या होती रही है, ऋषि उसी संभावना की आशंका जता रहे हैं। 'अपापस्य' (पाप रहित राम) शब्द का प्रयोग करके वे बताते हैं कि राम का अहित करना घोर पाप होगा। यह प्रश्न भरत के हृदय पर वज्र के समान लगा होगा, क्योंकि वे तो राम के चरणों में राज्य सौंपने आए थे।
