हतो ऽस्मि यदि मामेवं भगवानपि मन्यते ।
मत्तो न दोषमाशङ्के नैवं मामनुशाधि हि ॥२-९०-१५॥
hato 'smi yadi māmevaṃ bhagavānapi manyate |
matto na doṣamāśaṅke naivaṃ māmanuśādhi hi ॥2-90-15॥
Translation
"I am undone/slain if even you, Revered One, think of me in this way. Please do not suspect such a fault in me; do not judge/reproach me thus."

"यदि भगवान (आप) भी मेरे विषय में ऐसा मानते हैं, तो मैं मारा गया (मेरा सर्वनाश हो गया)। आप मुझसे (ऐसे) दोष की आशंका न करें, मेरे विषय में ऐसा उपदेश/विचार न रखें।"
English Commentary
Bharata’s response is a desperate plea for vindication. Hato 'smi (I am slain/ruined) signifies a moral and spiritual death; to be misunderstood by a sage of Bharadwaja's caliber is unbearable for him. The particle api in bhagavānapi implies, "The world may suspect me, but if even you do, then I have no hope." He implores the Sage not to harbor such suspicion (doṣamāśaṅke). This marks the turning point where Bharata stands firm in his truth, rejecting the projected guilt of his mother's actions. It is a raw appeal to the Sage's higher wisdom to see the reality of his heart.

'हतो ऽस्मि' (मैं मारा गया) एक अत्यंत शक्तिशाली वाक्यांश है। भरत का अर्थ है कि शारीरिक मृत्यु से बढ़कर यह 'चरित्र की मृत्यु' है। यदि त्रिकालदर्शी ऋषि भी उन्हें नहीं समझ पाए, तो उनके जीने का कोई औचित्य नहीं। 'भगवानपि' (आप जैसे ईश्वर तुल्य भी) शब्द उनकी हताशा को बढ़ाता है। वे ऋषि से प्रार्थना करते हैं कि वे उन पर दोषारोपण ('अनुशाधि' - यहाँ निंदा/आक्षेप के अर्थ में) न करें। यह भरत का आत्म-निवेदन है जो यह सिद्ध करता है कि वे सत्ता के नहीं, बल्कि सत्य और प्रेम के पथिक हैं।
