तथेति तत्प्रतिज्ञाय भरद्वाजो महातपा: ।
भरतं प्रत्युवाचेदं राघवस्नेहबन्धनात् ॥२-९०-९॥
tatheti tatpratijñāya bharadvājo mahātapāḥ |
bharataṃ pratyuvācedaṃ rāghavasnehabandhanāt ॥2-90-9॥
Translation
Acknowledging their inquiry by saying "Tatha" (So it is/All is well), the great ascetic Bharadwaja spoke the following words to Bharata, out of his deep bond of affection for Rama.
हिंदी अनुवाद
"तथा" (वैसा ही है, सब कुशल है)—ऐसा कहकर (उनके प्रश्न का उत्तर देकर), महातपस्वी भरद्वाज ने राम (राघव) के प्रति स्नेह-बंधन के कारण भरत से यह कहा।
English Commentary
Once the reciprocal pleasantries are exchanged with a brief assent ("Tatha"), the narrative pivots to the conflict. The motivation for Bharadwaja's upcoming interrogation is explicitly stated as rāghavasnehabandhanāt—his bond of affection for Rama. This clarifies that the Sage's suspicion is not born of malice toward Bharata, but of protective love for Rama. He has hosted Rama recently and witnessed his plight; thus, seeing the brother associated with that exile arrive with an army triggers a defensive mechanism. The Sage shifts from the role of a neutral host to a protective guardian of Rama.

औपचारिकताओं के समाप्त होते ही, अब मुख्य विषय आता है। ऋषि भरद्वाज का राम के प्रति विशेष स्नेह है ('राघवस्नेहबन्धनात्')। जब राम वन जा रहे थे, तब वे यहाँ रुके थे। ऋषि के मन में राम के प्रति जो वात्सल्य है, वही उन्हें भरत के प्रति कठोर प्रश्न पूछने के लिए प्रेरित करता है (जो अगले श्लोकों में आएंगे)। वे राम का अहित नहीं चाहते, इसलिए भरत की मंशा जानना चाहते हैं। 'तथेति' कहकर उन्होंने अपनी कुशलता की पुष्टि संक्षेप में कर दी ताकि वे तुरंत राम के विषय पर आ सकें। यह उनकी प्राथमिकता को दर्शाता है—स्वयं की कुशलता से अधिक उन्हें राम की चिंता है।
