Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
शुक्लानंशुमतश्चापि दन्तधावनसञ्चयान् ।
शुक्लांश्चन्दनकल्कांश्च समुद्गेष्ववतिष्ठत: ॥ ॥२-९१-७४॥
śuklānaṃśumataścāpi dantadhāvanasañcayān । śuklāṃścandanakalkāṃśca samudgeṣvavatiṣṭhata: ॥ ॥2-91-74॥
Translation
There were heaps of white, fibrous tooth-cleaning sticks, and white sandalwood paste kept in covered boxes.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वहां (दांत साफ करने के लिए) रेशेदार सफेद दतौन के ढेर लगे थे। और डिब्बों (सम्पुटों) में रखा हुआ श्वेत चंदन का लेप भी विद्यमान था।
English Commentary
The attention to detail extends to oral hygiene and grooming. The verse mentions dantadavana—twigs used as toothbrushes—specifically describing them as white and fibrous, indicating they were fresh and suitable for use. Furthermore, sandalwood paste (chandana), prized for its cooling properties and fragrance, was provided in boxes (samudgeshu). Applying sandalwood is a traditional way to cool the body after a bath and signifies honor and refreshment. The Sage provided amenities that treated every soldier with royal regard.

शारीरिक शुद्धि के विवरण में यह श्लोक और गहराई में जाता है। 'दन्तधावन' (दातुन) का उल्लेख है, जो 'अंशुमत' (रेशेदार) और 'शुक्ल' (स्वच्छ/ताजा) थीं। भोजन के बाद मुख शुद्धि अनिवार्य है। इसके साथ ही 'चन्दनकल्क' (चंदन का लेप) का उल्लेख है जो 'समुद्गेषु' (डिब्बों या सम्पुटों) में रखा था। चंदन शीतलता प्रदान करता है और थकान दूर करता है। सैनिकों के लिए चंदन का लेप एक विलासिता थी जो प्रायः राजाओं को सुलभ होती थी, परन्तु भरद्वाज के आश्रम में यह सभी के लिए उपलब्ध था।
