Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ते वृक्षानुदकं भूमिमाश्रमेषूटजांस्तथा ।
न हिंस्युरिति तेनाहमेक एव समागत: ॥ ॥२-९१-९॥
Te vṛkṣānudakaṃ bhūmimāśrameṣūṭajāṃstathā । Na hiṃsyuriti tenāhameka eva samāgataḥ ॥ ॥2-91-9॥
Translation
"Lest they harm the trees, the water, the ground, and the huts within the hermitages, I have come here alone."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"वे (सैनिक और पशु) यहाँ के वृक्षों, जल, भूमि तथा आश्रम की कुटियाओं को नष्ट न कर दें, इसी विचार से मैं अकेला ही आया हूँ।"
English Commentary
This verse is a remarkable display of ecological consciousness and respect for sacred spaces. Bharata enumerates the specific elements he wishes to protect: trees (Vriksha), water sources (Udaka), the earth (Bhumi), and the cottages (Utaja). He fears that the mere presence of his army would constitute Himsa (injury/violence) to the serene environment of the ashram. By coming alone (Eka eva), he demonstrates that a leader must sometimes shed the trappings of power to approach the divine respectfully. It portrays Bharata not just as a prince, but as a disciplined custodian of nature and culture.

यह श्लोक भरत की पर्यावरणीय संवेदनशीलता और आश्रम के प्रति सम्मान की पराकाष्ठा है। भरत विशेष रूप से वृक्षों, जल, भूमि और 'उटज' (पर्णकुटी) की सुरक्षा को लेकर चिंतित हैं। एक विशाल सेना अनजाने में ही जल स्रोतों को गंदा कर सकती है और वनस्पतियों को कुचल सकती है। 'न हिंस्युरिति' (हिंसा न करें/नुकसान न पहुँचाएँ) वाक्यांश का प्रयोग कर भरत यह सिद्ध करते हैं कि वे अहिंसा और संरक्षण के मूल्यों को समझते हैं। यह विचार आधुनिक काल में भी प्रासंगिक है कि सैन्य गतिविधियों को नागरिक और प्राकृतिक क्षेत्रों से दूर रखा जाना चाहिए।
