Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अस्यावामभुजं श्लिष्टा यैषा तिष्ठति दुर्मना: ।
कर्णिकारस्य शाखेव शीर्णपुष्पा वनान्तरे ॥२-९२-२२॥
Asyāvāmabhujaṃ śliṣṭā yaiṣā tiṣṭhati durmanāḥ । Karṇikārasya śākheva śīrṇapuṣpā vanāntare ॥2-92-22॥
Translation
She who stands clinging to her (Kausalya's) left arm, sorrowful in mind, looks like a branch of the Karnikara tree with withered flowers in the middle of a forest.
हिंदी अनुवाद
इन (कौसल्या) की बाईं भुजा का सहारा लेकर जो यह उदास मन वाली (रानी) खड़ी हैं, वे वन में मुर्झाए हुए फूलों वाली कर्णिकार (कनेर/अमलतास) की शाखा के समान प्रतीत हो रही हैं।
English Commentary
This verse introduces Sumitra with a strikingly melancholic simile. She is compared to a Karṇikāra branch whose flowers have withered (śīrṇapuṣpā) in the forest. The Karnikara is known for its beauty, but without flowers, it is desolate; similarly, Sumitra, separated from her sons and husband, has lost her radiance. Her posture—clinging (śliṣṭā) to Kausalya's left arm—symbolizes the solidarity of grief and her supportive nature, even while she herself is durmanāḥ (broken-hearted).

यह सुमित्रा का परिचय है। वाल्मीकि जी की उपमा यहाँ अद्भुत है। कर्णिकार का वृक्ष अपने सुंदर पीत पुष्पों के लिए जाना जाता है, लेकिन यहाँ वह 'शीर्णपुष्पा' (जिसके फूल झड़ या सूख गए हों) है। सुमित्रा अपने दो पुत्रों (लक्ष्मण और शत्रुघ्न) के वियोग और पति की मृत्यु के कारण उस शाखा जैसी हैं जिसका सौंदर्य और जीवन-रस (पुष्प) छीन लिया गया हो। कौसल्या का हाथ पकड़े रहना दोनों रानियों के बीच के सौहार्द और साझा दुख को दर्शाता है।
