ममैतां मातरं विद्धि नृशंसां पापनिश्चयाम् ।
यतो मूलं हि पश्यामि व्यसनं महदात्मन: ॥२-९२-२६॥
Mamaitāṃ mātaraṃ viddhi nṛśaṃsāṃ pāpaniścayām । Yato mūlaṃ hi paśyāmi vyasanaṃ mahadātmanaḥ ॥2-92-26॥
Translation
Know this cruel woman, resolved to sin, to be my mother. Indeed, I see her as the very root of this great calamity that has befallen us.
हिंदी अनुवाद
इस क्रूर (नृशंसा) और पाप का निश्चय करने वाली स्त्री को ही मेरी माता जानिए। मैं अपने (और हम सबके) इस महान संकट (दुःख) का मूल कारण इसी को मानता हूँ।
English Commentary
Bharata concludes the introduction with a heavy admission: "Know this one to be my mother." He labels her nṛśaṃsāṃ (cruel/wicked) and pāpaniścayām (of sinful resolve). He identifies her as the mūlam (root cause) of the mahat vyasanaṃ (great calamity/misery) that has befallen him and the kingdom. By denouncing his mother so publicly before a Sage, Bharata disassociates himself from her actions, prioritizing Dharma and righteousness over biological loyalty.

भरत परिचय पूरा करते हैं: "इसे मेरी माँ जानिए" (विद्धि ममैतां मातरं)। वे उसे 'नृशंसां' (क्रूर/दयाहीन) और 'पापनिश्चयाम्' (पापपूर्ण संकल्प वाली) कहते हैं। भरत स्पष्ट करते हैं कि वर्तमान में वे जिस महान संकट ('व्यसनं महदात्मन:') का सामना कर रहे हैं, उसकी जड़ ('मूलं') यही स्त्री है। अपनी ही माता को सार्वजनिक रूप से ऋषि के सामने 'पापिनी' और 'दुखों की जड़' कहना यह सिद्ध करता है कि भरत राम-प्रेम में रक्त-संबंधों को भी गौण मानते हैं।
