भरतस्य वच: श्रुत्वा पुरुषा: शस्त्रपाणय: ।
विविशुस्तद्वनं शूरा धूमं च ददृशुस्तत: ॥२-९३-२१॥
bharatasya vaca: śrutvā puruṣā: śastrapāṇaya: |
viviśustadvanaṃ śūrā dhūmaṃ ca dadṛśustata: ॥2-93-21॥
Translation
Hearing Bharata's words, the brave men, weapons in hand, entered that forest and then saw smoke.

भरत के वचन सुनकर, शस्त्रधारी वीर सैनिक उस वन में प्रविष्ट हुए और तदनन्तर उन्होंने (एक स्थान पर) धुआँ देखा।
English Commentary
Acting on the order, the soldiers, described as 'shastrapanayah' (weapons in hand), scour the forest. The pivotal discovery is made: they spot 'dhumam' (smoke). In a dense wilderness, a rising column of smoke is the definitive sign of human habitation, specifically of a sacrificial fire (Agni). This visual cue narrows down their search instantly from the entire mountain to a specific spot.

सैनिकों ने भरत की आज्ञा का पालन किया और वन में प्रवेश किया। 'शस्त्रपाणय:' (हाथ में शस्त्र लिए हुए) शब्द महत्वपूर्ण है—यद्यपि वे खोज रहे हैं, पर वे सैनिक हैं और सुरक्षा के लिए तैयार हैं। उनकी खोज का पहला परिणाम 'धूमं' (धुआँ) के रूप में मिला। घने जंगल में धुआँ दिखाई देना मनुष्य की उपस्थिति का सबसे बड़ा प्रमाण है। यह कथा का एक महत्वपूर्ण मोड़ है।
