Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अथ नात्र नरव्याघ्रौ राजपुत्रौ परन्तपौ ।
मन्ये रामोपमा: सन्ति व्यक्तमत्र तपस्विन: ॥२-९३-२३॥
atha nātra naravyāghrau rājaputrau parantapau |
manye rāmopamā: santi vyaktamatra tapasvina: ॥2-93-23॥
Translation
"Or, if those two tigers among men, the destroyers of foes, the princes are not here, then I think there are certainly ascetics here who are like Rama."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"अथवा यदि वे शत्रु-दमनकारी नरश्रेष्ठ राजकुमार यहाँ न भी हों, तो भी मैं मानता हूँ कि यहाँ राम के समान ही कोई (अन्य) तपस्वी अवश्य हैं।"
English Commentary
The scouts offer a cautious alternative. While confident, they allow for the possibility that the smoke might belong to other sages. They state that even if the princes ('rajaputrau') are not there, surely other ascetics 'Ramopamah' (comparable to Rama in sanctity) reside there. This ensures that the discovery of smoke is a positive lead regardless—either they find Rama, or someone who knows him.

सैनिक (या भरत, संदर्भानुसार यह सैनिकों का कथन है) सावधानी बरत रहे हैं। यद्यपि धुआँ है, पर यह शत-प्रतिशत निश्चित नहीं कि वह राम का ही है। इसलिए वे कहते हैं कि यदि राम नहीं भी हुए, तो भी 'रामोपमा: तपस्विन:' (राम जैसे प्रभावशाली तपस्वी) तो होंगे ही, जिनसे राम का पता पूछा जा सकता है। यह यथार्थवादी दृष्टिकोण है। 'परन्तपौ' (शत्रुओं को तपाने वाले) विशेषण राम-लक्ष्मण की वीरता का स्मरण कराता है।
