स लक्ष्मण: संत्वरित: सालमारुह्य पुष्पितम् ।
प्रेक्षमाणो दिश: सर्वा: पूर्वां दिशमुदैक्षत ॥२-९६-११॥
sa lakṣmaṇaḥ saṃtvaritaḥ sālamāruhya puṣpitam । prekṣamāṇo diśaḥ sarvāḥ pūrvāṃ diśamudaikṣata ॥2-96-11॥
Translation
Then Lakshmana hurriedly climbed a flowering Sal tree and, looking in all directions, gazed specifically towards the eastern direction.

तब लक्ष्मण ने शीघ्रता से एक फूले हुए साल के वृक्ष पर चढ़कर सब दिशाओं में दृष्टि डाली और विशेष रूप से पूर्व दिशा की ओर देखा।
English Commentary
Lakshmana responds with immediate action (saṃtvaritaḥ). He employs a tactical move by climbing a tall, flowering Sal tree to gain a vantage point. Scanning all directions, he fixes his gaze on the East. The specific mention of the Sal tree adds local flavor to the flora of Chitrakuta. His focused gaze indicates he has located the source of the sound. This verse showcases Lakshmana as the proactive protector, physically elevating himself to shield Rama and Sita from surprise.

राम की आज्ञा पाते ही लक्ष्मण की तत्परता ('संत्वरित:') देखने योग्य है। वे स्थिति का जायजा लेने के लिए एक ऊँचे 'साल' वृक्ष पर चढ़ जाते हैं। साल के वृक्ष अपनी ऊँचाई के लिए प्रसिद्ध हैं, जो 'वॉच-टावर' का काम करते हैं। लक्ष्मण पहले चारों और देखते हैं, फिर 'पूर्वां दिशम्' (पूर्व दिशा) पर ध्यान केंद्रित करते हैं। अयोध्या उत्तर में है, परन्तु मार्ग के अनुसार सेना संभवतः पूर्व या उत्तर-पूर्व की ओर से आ रही थी (चित्रकूट के संदर्भ में)। लक्ष्मण का वृक्ष पर चढ़ना एक कुशल स्काउट या प्रहरी की रणनीति है।
