उदङ्मुख: प्रेक्षमाणो ददर्श महतीं चमूम् ।
रथाश्वगजसम्बाधां यत्तैर्युक्तां पदातिभि: ॥२-९६-१२॥
udaṅmukhaḥ prekṣamāṇo dadarśa mahatīṃ camūm । rathāśvagajasambādhāṃ yattairyuktāṃ padātibhiḥ ॥2-96-12॥
Translation
Looking towards the north, he saw a huge army crowded with chariots, horses, and elephants, and accompanied by prepared infantry.

उत्तर की ओर मुख करके देखते हुए उन्होंने एक विशाल सेना देखी, जो रथों, घोड़ों और हाथियों से भरी हुई थी तथा जिसमें पैदल सैनिक भी सन्नद्ध (तैयार) होकर चल रहे थे।
English Commentary
From his vantage point, Lakshmana confirms the disturbance is indeed human and massive. He spots a mahatīṃ camūm (great army). The description confirms a full-fledged military force complete with the traditional four limbs: chariots, cavalry, elephants, and infantry (padātibhiḥ). The term yattaiḥ suggests the soldiers are disciplined or ready for action. Seeing such a force in the wild triggers Lakshmana's protective aggression, as he naturally assumes this military might is directed against Rama.

वृक्ष के ऊपर से लक्ष्मण ने जिस दृश्य को देखा, वह उनकी आशंकाओं की पुष्टि करता है। 'महतीं चमूम्' (विशाल सेना) को देखकर वे सतर्क हो जाते हैं। सेना 'चतुरंगिणी' है—जिसमें रथ, अश्व, गज और पदाति (पैदल सैनिक) सभी हैं। 'सम्बाधां' (भीड़-भाड़/ठसाठस भरी हुई) और 'यत्तै:' (उद्यत/तैयार) शब्द बताते हैं कि सेना सुसज्जित है और अभियान पर निकली है। निर्जन वन में ऐसी विशाल सेना का दिखना लक्ष्मण के मन में तुरंत शत्रुता या आक्रमण का संदेह उत्पन्न करता है, जो अगले श्लोकों में उनके क्रोध का कारण बनेगा।
