एष वै सुमहान् श्रीमान् विटपी सम्प्रकाशते ।
विराजत्युद्गतस्कन्ध: कोविदारध्वजो रथे ॥२-९६-१८॥
eṣa vai sumahān śrīmān viṭapī samprakāśate । virājatyudgataskandhaḥ kovidāradhvajo rathe ॥2-96-18॥
Translation
"Indeed, that very large and glorious Kovidara (Orchid tree) flag is clearly visible. It shines on the chariot with its tall staff."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"निश्चित ही वह विशाल और शोभायमान कोविदार (कचनार) के वृक्ष वाला ध्वज स्पष्ट दिखाई दे रहा है। वह रथ पर ऊंचे तने के साथ शोभा पा रहा है।"
English Commentary
The identification is confirmed through the royal insignia. The Kovidara (Orchid tree) flag was the distinctive banner of Bharata. Seeing this flag (kovidāradhvajo) flying high on the chariot serves as undeniable proof to Lakshmana that Bharata is leading the army. This visual confirmation cements his theory of an invasion. In ancient warfare, identifying the enemy's standard was the first step in engagement.
हिंदी टीका
लक्ष्मण ने सेना की पहचान कर ली है। 'कोविदार' (कचनार) का वृक्ष अयोध्या के रघुकुल या विशेषकर भरत के रथ का चिन्ह (Insignia) था। ध्वज को देखकर लक्ष्मण का संदेह विश्वास में बदल जाता है कि यह भरत की ही सेना है। 'विराजति' (विराजमान है/चमक रहा है) शब्द बताता है कि ध्वज बहुत ऊँचा और प्रमुख है। युद्ध या यात्रा में ध्वज सेनापति की उपस्थिति का प्रमाण होता है। इस पहचान ने लक्ष्मण के क्रोध को और भड़का दिया है।
