पूर्वापकारी भरतस्त्यक्तधर्मश्च राघव ।
एतस्मिन्निहते कृत्स्नामनुशाधि वसुन्धराम् ॥ ॥२-९६-२५॥
Pūrvāpakārī Bharatastyaktadharmaśca Rāghava । Etasminnihate kṛtsnāmanuśādhi vasundharām ॥ ॥2-96-25॥
Translation
O Raghava, Bharata is a past offender and has abandoned Dharma. With him killed, you shall rule the entire earth.

हे राघव! भरत ने पहले ही हमारा अपकार किया है और धर्म का त्याग कर दिया है। इसके मारे जाने पर आप संपूर्ण पृथ्वी पर शासन करें।
English Commentary
Lakshmana’s rage blinds him to Bharata’s true nature. He labels Bharata as pūrvāpakārī (one who has offended previously) and one who has abandoned Dharma, referencing the acceptance of the crown which rightfully belonged to Rama. In Lakshmana's warrior logic, eliminating a usurper—even a brother—is justifiable to restore the rightful order. This verse highlights the intensity of Lakshmana’s devotion; he is willing to commit fratricide to secure Rama’s rights, viewing the incoming army as a hostile force intent on finishing what Kaikeyi started.

लक्ष्मण का क्रोध यहाँ अपनी चरम सीमा पर है। वे भरत को 'पूर्वापकारी' (जिसने पहले अपराध किया हो) कहते हैं, उनका संकेत राज्य-तिलक के समय उत्पन्न हुई परिस्थितियों की ओर है। लक्ष्मण के अनुसार, भरत ने बड़े भाई का अधिकार छीनकर 'धर्म' का त्याग किया है, इसलिए ऐसे अधर्मी का वध करना पाप नहीं, बल्कि न्याय है। लक्ष्मण क्षत्रिय धर्म के उस कठोर पहलू को उजागर कर रहे हैं जहाँ राज्य की रक्षा और आततायी के वध के लिए पारिवारिक मोह को त्यागने की बात कही जाती है। उनका प्रेम राम के प्रति इतना अनन्य है कि उन्हें भरत शत्रु प्रतीत हो रहे हैं।
