Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
नहि ते निष्ठुरं वाच्यो भरतो नाप्रियं वच:।
अहं ह्यप्रियमुक्त: स्यां भरतस्याप्रिये कृते ॥ ॥२-९७-१५॥
Nahi te niṣṭhuraṃ vācyo Bharato nāpriyaṃ vacaḥ। Ahaṃ hyapriyamuktaḥ syāṃ Bharatasya apriye kṛte ॥ ॥2-97-15॥
Translation
You must certainly not speak harsh or unpleasant words to Bharata. For if an unpleasant thing is done to Bharata, I would consider it done to me.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तुम्हें भरत को न तो कठोर वचन कहने चाहिए और न ही कोई अप्रिय बात। यदि भरत का अप्रिय किया गया, तो समझो कि (वह) मेरा ही अप्रिय किया गया है।
English Commentary
Rama issues a stern directive to Lakshmana regarding his conduct. He forbids any harsh speech (niṣṭhuraṃ vācyo) towards Bharata. Rama equates himself with Bharata, stating that any insult to Bharata is an insult to Rama himself. This identification serves to protect Bharata from Lakshmana's tongue and sword, effectively placing Rama as a shield between the two younger brothers.

राम यहाँ लक्ष्मण को चेतावनी देते हैं। वे स्पष्ट कर देते हैं कि भरत और राम 'एक' हैं। यदि लक्ष्मण भरत को बुरा-भला कहते हैं, तो वह सीधा राम को चोट पहुँचाएगा। यह 'एकात्मता' का भाव है। राम लक्ष्मण को संयम बरतने का आदेश दे रहे हैं। वे नहीं चाहते कि लक्ष्मण के क्रोध के कारण भाइयों के मिलन में कोई कड़वाहट आए।
